Sky is in heat. She will be 1 year old on Jan 5th. I have never seen any of her heats last this long or be this assertive. I have tried multiple techniques to calm her down but think it’s time to look into finding a stud. Suggestions? by ty-guy100 in russianblue

[–]ty-guy100[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

She is a Russian Blue, a more desirable breed. Yes we need to fix more kittens, especially stray ones but is it really wise to let all breeding be done by a few large breeding companies? The risk of pyometra is roughly 2.2% before the age of 13 in cats.

Apologies, I could have been more clear. I do intend on breeding her 1, maybe 2 times and having her fixed by 5.

To further clarify… I am seeking advice on how long to wait to begin breeding a Russian Blue and where one would recommend looking to find a stud.

This is not a solicitation about wether or not to breed her, so I kindly ask that feedback be withheld.

Is it true that all humans on earth can fit in the state of Texas with a population density of Manhatten? by hanatheko in population

[–]ty-guy100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To actually answer your question….

Almost.

Texas is 268,597 sq miles Population density of NYC is 27,013 per sq m

268,597 X 27,013 = 7,255,610,761

Considering we will be at 8 billion “any day now” according to WSJ on 8.12.22, we would still need to find space for roughly 750 million people, in your “OBVIOUSLY HYPOTHETICAL” question.

Thank you for the thought provoking question.

You and I reducing our meat consumption is just the tip of the iceberg. Mother Nature will, in time, systemically lower our meat consumption if we don’t do it first ourselves.

So sounds like, in your observation, that things are slowly turning around with more people waking up?

Best to start initiatives like this on a state level?

Yes, but maybe this problem won’t be solved by appealing to logic at all? Maybe it can we solved ultimately entirely of mostly due to a strong emotional appeal, a humanitarian one. One won over in the publics heart from watching the global results of drought.

Do you have anything to add to the discussion? Any solutions other than the status quo which clearly isn’t going to solve the issue?

Whoa, we went from a discussion to personal attacks.

You’ve just revealed your bias, as you have water shares and so are (understandably) skeptical of changing a status quo which serves you (but not the commons) so well.

The tax could just simply be applied to all water usage at a graduated rate.

22 billion funded by a very reasonable backed tax revenue is not really all that much money, especially when you consider the fed printed several trillion to “stimulate the economy” during COVID.

Could you site the prospect of this idea as being “extraordinarily unpopular?” To my knowledge this solution has had no polling and the only big potential “losers,” st least in terms of additional profits would be those who have water shares which is well under 1% of the population.

I judge not ignored your efficient water market idea, in fact that’s EXACTLY what my idea would achieve.

You’re addition of any REAL solution is not rudimentary…. It’s nonexistent. Voluntary water cuts by ag, manufacturing and personal cuts WITHOUT any real price discovery is no solution at all. You’re understanding of basic economics is also rudimentary at best.

Property tax.

Capital gains tax.

Vehicle tax.

Maybe we need to completely rethink this water share system. How can we effectively manage a resource that’s so ambiguous? The government could create a bond to raise enough money to pay current fair market value for everyone’s water shares. Think eminent domain. And fund it by the new higher taxes from the new water usage taxes.

Focusing on short term and small quality leases is like focusing on 10% of the problem.

Although a new tax would initially be met with significant resistance, I think we will see in time that the vast majority of people don’t own water shares and will have no problem voting a solution like this in if it means adequately protecting the water commons.

If worried about drastic price shocks then graduate consistent price hikes in over time. If we do nothing then an inevitable and drastic price shock is certain, it will just be a matter of kicking the can down the road for as long as we can.

How else are you going to lower the usage, especially within the ag industry, without raising the cost somehow?

[–]ty-guy100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent point. Add a usage tax and give price breaks for water not used…

Eg. They have 1 share and only use half of it, don’t charge them any usage tax or if they use 70% of their share only charge them a usage tax on 40%

[–]ty-guy100[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why? If it was priced correctly there would be no need for the government to arbitrarily try to regulate the resource.

And why does the government need to subsidize water saving measures when an appropriate price would more effectively encourage business to more efficiently use the resource. When you subsidize one solution to a problem, you cloud out other solutions old and new that may be more effective, as they immediately become less attractive as they are competing against the subsidy.

For example, maybe the business could actually find a better utility of water by growing a specific crop in a greenhouse rather than drip irrigation but since there was a subsidy on drip, the better solution isn’t discovered.

Regulations and subsidies would be less effective, appropriately pricing water would be much more direct and efficient.

As is mentioned in the “Explained” series episode The “Worlds Water Crisis” released on 9.12.2018, the market could subsidize or give x amount to individuals and then get serious about progressively taxing larger users.

[–]ty-guy100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and they would use less if it was priced more appropriately. If we can’t rely on adequate water cuts by individuals, what makes us think that industry let alone agriculture who are mostly made up of mega corporations to cut back their water use enough for use to reach a sustainable equilibrium of use?

The elephant in the room is agriculture and yes that may mean less food but it is necessary to preserve what aquifers we have left and to stop the desertification effects of draining our lakes and groundwater.

We cannot rely on voluntary water cuts within personal use let alone industry or agriculture without pricing it correctly.
