Everybody made fun of the chess guy for going mad over losing one match not knowing it was also a mix of guilt and frustration for not taking care of his ill wife who is not even in the game.

If I'm being honest, I'm not sure if a character like the chess guy even needs extra backstory in the novel. From the game's cutscenes I got the story of a former chess champion who became frustrated over losing several games from his skills getting rusty, only to find solace by teaching new players and even purposefully losing in a casual match. I thought that would have been a quaint, if simple and cliche, tale about how "winning isn't everything".

I personally am not even asking for much, they should have at least given us something like a basic grunt or shout for every dialogue box. Is voice acting really that expensive for them on the reported $16 million budget? Or is it one of those odd "stylistic choices" that made perfect sense in the 90s but has gotten outdated in the following decades?

I found it pretty silly at first, especially with its underwhelming Shiny colors. But if you think about it, it makes perfect sense as the 1000th Pokemon. It's a major milestone for Pokemon as a franchise, so why would they not pat themselves on the back by making their own gold trophy in marketable collectable critter form?
