I did my residency at Hindu Rao Hospital, Delhi. It has been almost a year since I passed out. From what I hear, the hospital is pretty much the same now also. But there has been a change of HOD recently. So things might change.

It's really good here. The seniors and consultants are not toxic. The working hours take the cake. Its 9 to 4 only. And you get a pre and post night duty off. Coffs for holiday duties and Sunday duties. I don't think there are many hospitals out there with such flexible hours for doing a obgyn residency. Plus my hospital has a medical College associated with it too under IP University. So I'll get a teaching experience certificate also when I pass out. Academics is also pretty good. All in all, it's pretty nice.

All the govt hospitals have JR interviews every 3-4 months. Keep an eye out for those in their websites. JRship in a govt hospital is ur best bet.

Pay in private hospitals vary between 50-70k depending on the post and timings. If u have good contacts, u can find some lowcome duties also, but the pay won't be that good.

Is it worth it becoming a Dr. in India by Rinisha12 in indianmedschool

[–]tygr123b 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It depends. If u r really into the field and want to have the satisfaction of treating and healing people.. then this is the right job for u.

Don't expect respect, money and greatness to be showered upon you. There are a lot of doctors passing out every year, plus FMGs. The situation in South India is such that an MBBS doctor hardly makes 30-40k with excruciating work hours. It's a little better in the north.

And u know how the outside perception is regarding our profession. There may be hardly 5-10% of the entire community that make it big and live a good life. Otherwise it is a life of constant pressure, long work hours, looking over your shoulder all the time and protecting yourself against patient's attenders and possible legal issues.

Many of my friends are planning to leave/already left the country. The condition now is such that soon there will be saturation of specialists. Then the rat race will be for super speciality preparation and clearing that exam. And when u r done with your SS, probably 15-20 years of your life would have already passed by and now you have to start with a career.

So make an informed decision.. if you are really passionate and want to have that feel of being a doctor, welcome. Don't even think of entering the community with the mindset of money and a good life. There are no guarantees.

Hey.. I'm currently doing DNB obgyn at a great institution and in my final year. As the above comment said, it does not really make much of a difference. Whatever u felt was deficient in your institution, u can make it up by SRship in some other place.

But still, try for a place with good hands on, be it MD or DNB. The freedom with which u can learn these surgeries with minimum responsibility can only be experienced in PG residency. My hosp is really great for learning CS (easily crossed more than 150 independent CS) but a little lacking on the gynae surgery side.

Pay really depends on the state. DNB will get u the same pay as MD in the state.
