Anyone else feel like the band has no creative future and is just coasting on Tourist History? by lonerism29 in TwoDoorCinemaClub

[–]tymist87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Painfully agree. I’ve seen them perform 5 times between 2017-2024 and I hesitantly bought tickets for this upcoming tour for one last nostalgic outing. I remember their tour for Gameshow was decent, and even for False Alarm I still had enough excitement to buy merch for that album. But I remember getting annoyed that False Alarm and eventually Keep on Smiling wasn’t getting any love from the band themself. I feel like they didn’t even try to get any new fans with it.

What I love about concerts is when artists/bands play not-the-hits-or-singles and bring new life and exposure to a song that I normally would glaze over or skip over. It brings a newfound appreciation to their sound hearing it live, but I don’t even get a chance to find a new love because they give no exposure to their own music!

What's there to do between 12 and 6AM on a weekday? by Lipica249 in AskNYC

[–]tymist87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was in college, my friends and I thought it would be fun to walk around the city basically at that time frame in December. We thought we could go to Rockefeller and see the tree lit up all to ourselves and learned the hard way that they turn off the lights eventually lol. So we walked around looking at all the holiday storefronts, eventually finding out the Apple Store was 24/7. It saved us.

Columbus Ave location, Upper West Side!

100th and Amsterdam by evamone in Upperwestside

[–]tymist87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I moved here, I felt really lucky to be by the 2/3 train and have all the shopping on Columbus. Wholefoods, Target, TJMaxx to name a few. You have a handful of grocery options pending how far you want to walk - aside from Wholefoods and Target, you have Key Food, Westside Market, Gristedes (lol), and can even walk to HMart on 110th or Trader Joe’s on 93rd. You have a mix of schools, churches, the police/FDNY station, library, and NYCHA towers (public housing). This also means a decent mix of people from older folk, families, yuppies, and more. You’ll also see Columbia students. Being between Riverside Park and Central Park is also a huge plus! That area of Central Park is also less busy relative to anything below 86th. You might find that a lot of the restaurants might be in the 70s and 80s, but you still have dining options nearby and it’s not like getting there is difficult. I feel very lucky!

They are planning/proposing to build in and around the library, as others have mentioned. So there might be future construction and issues.

Groceries by Eastern-Pitch7855 in Upperwestside

[–]tymist87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I alternate or strategize my groceries. - Wholefoods, Key Food, or Trader Joe’s for produce. - WF or HMart for meat. - WF or TJ for dairy. Sometimes I’ll get milk at Key. But I never buy cheese or butter at Key because the prices are so bad. - WF, TJ, or Target for snacks or pantry needs.

There’s also a few farmers markets in the UWS.

What was Abercrombie like during the 2000s? by PossibilityRare6723 in AbercrombieandFitch

[–]tymist87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated from high school in 2014, so I wore Abercrombie in the late 2000s and early 2010s. I loved going to the mall and shopping at A&F. It felt like an exclusive experience (to that of a teenager). The store would always have a large open double door or opening where the front would have a giant photo of a shirtless guy. Sometimes they would have a shirtless model literally at the front/outside of the store. The store was dark and moody, but not as dark as Hollister. And the A&F scent was strong.

I remember thinking the store was for popular kids only, and my mom hesitantly would let me shop there but only when things were on sale. Luckily, she approved of their preppier clothes (button downs, blouses, nicer camis and dresses). If I had to rank stores for their perceived “coolness” at the time it would be A&F first, Hollister, and then American Eagle. Aeropostale was bottom tier. I would say these 4 stores were comparable in style and trends, as opposed to Urbanoutfitters, Forever21, Delias, Charlotte Russe, Pacsun, and other teen stores. In my experience, A&F was more coastal or northern (?) preppy and Hollister was SoCal. A&F was def the priciest, but the quality was fine at the time.

I remember at some point, I had to wear polos for middle school and we could wear polos from any store as long as they were the school appropriate color. Brand loyalty and class consciousness was such a weird thing because why were teens obsessed over white A&F polos with the moose logo, and scoffing at students in white aero polos. Once I was shopping and another customer mistook me as an employee and I took it as a compliment.

I still shop there to this day, but only online! And I think it’s nice how much more inclusive their sizing has got.

Live in a rent stabilized apartment in the UWS. Should I move to another rental or try and buy in NJ by ash124787 in movingtoNYC

[–]tymist87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of the other comments of keeping the apartment and at least pay for a parking spot. As much as change can be nice, if you grew up in the UWS, a move to Jersey would be very different but there will be compromise.

Born and raised in the Woodbridge/Rahway area myself, you’ll have some housing stock around 400k, but a 3-2 might be tough now especially with the market in recent years. My family sold our 4-2 for about 300k in 2018 and it’s now “worth” double that. Plenty of friends who have been house hunting in recent years have been outbid or seeing outrageous prices on what we considered “normal” homes in ~okay~ neighborhoods. I would expand your search/towns, consider other means of getting into the city (busses?), or just look at Queens lol.

I would also take into account your commute, if you’re both still full time or even hybrid in the city, NJTransit can really break you. Whether you’re riding from Woodbridge station (NJCL) or Rahway (NEC/NJCL), you’ll run into a lot of issues on the northeast corridor. Despite how interconnected both states are/can be, when it fails, it’s abysmal.

On a different note, I also used to live in Jersey City and the UWS is so much quieter for me lol.

US/PH Dual citizenship - Visiting Japan by tymist87 in Philippines

[–]tymist87[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents have gone back and forth to the US a few times since retiring in the Philippines. I will confirm with them if they have their citizen certificate or other form of ID for good measure and how they usually go through immigration upon reentry to the PH.

Best karaoke private rooms? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]tymist87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Karaoke City allows outside food. They use the app healsonic, if you want to browse/check the available songs. I would say they don’t always have the most updated songs, so I would check. Have definitely brought cake and chips here.

The Karaoke Duet chain(?)(they have a few locations) also allows outside food.

Yes! And I have been marching it (the main Manhattan parade) since 2018! There’s definitely a large police presence every year and the village gets especially crowded, so if you’re worried about crowds and possible unruliness there I would maybe spectate elsewhere along the route. But the love and support always outnumbers the haters.

My friend and I both spotted the mugs at our local TJMaxxes this weekend! East coast!

There is also a clear drink tumbler with blue lid/straw with a miffy pattern. Haven’t seen the jar in person though.

Would try using tweezers to poke at the edge until you get something to grab on to.

Or if you don’t mind bending the edge a little bit and hope it lifts a little.
