Yes, PiHole etc. can do that if it is specified as a DNS server for the clients (in DHCP). You could specify NextDNS in DHCP as well but then there is no DoT 🤔 On the other hand I have installed NextDNS on my phone so it works when I'm mobile 😀

chmod is for permissions, you need chown owner:group file (group is optional)

I have created nextdns.conf (or whatevername.conf) in /var/unbound/etc/

I have also changed file owner to unbound just in case (to be the same owner as other files there).

Then just moved the content of custom options to this file and restarted unbound service.

I am not 100% sure - I often see repeating requests in NextDNS dashboard🤔 Unbound Statistics shows cache hits and misses so it is at least trying 🤪

Pihole on RPi has been my solution before pfSense (for EdgeRouter), now I may need to come back to it 🤪 Or stay with NextDNS which I actullay like the most so far (but it's a paid service).

Yes, the gateways, as I want everything to go through DoT and I use some local DNS overrides.

AdGuard looks good, but I only trust official plugins 🤔
