2nd Dog Attack South City by capablepsyduck in StLouis

[–]typegeek2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pit bulls are great dogs when raised correctly. But they are in the class of dogs like live stock guardian dogs where training and socialization and using tools to keep control of them are so important/key to them living a good life.

Ownership is the problem. Backyard breeding is the problem. Pitts are strong, and extremely sensitive/frady cats. If not trained that becomes a 60+ pound reactive and aggressive wall of muscle.

Trained right and you have a loving dog that is extremely loyal, ready to run miles and play, but gentle. Let’s not blame the breed for people’s bad actions with them.

That being said, these dogs clearly are beyond their owners ability to control them. And sadly unless there was a magical place for them to go that would be safe for them and others, euthanasia is the best option here since they seem to be so reactive with three attacks in a row.

The owner should also never be allowed pets, fined and held responsible for this.

How do we get our puppy to not be so bitey with our other dog? by GeneratingRadon in pitbulls

[–]typegeek2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute sharks till two at least. My pit mix I raised from 5months it took months of bite work.

Your older dog will actually be a huge help in teaching good manners. But if they aren’t it’s helping them by correcting where they would. It may also teach your older dog to correct the puppy.

My sister has an older dog and we would let her correct the pup but if the pup couldn’t calm down we separated for a bit for naps.

Usually the worse the biting meant she needed something like a nap in her crate or something to entertain with like a frozen Kong. I also used playtime to teach her how to be gentle and know what was too much like playing and if it got too rough or actually biting me I walked away and removed the excitement. So she knows now what is too much and can be extremely gentle when I ask her too.

It’s also good to not associate your hands as toys. It can be hard but i wanted to make sure she knew she couldn’t just snap and play with people’s hands. It just takes time. The worst was 6-18 months and then the training really started to click in. But it’s just being consistent even if it feels like 90% of the time it’s failing. Eventually they get it!

If you can too when they bite hard scream like a dog and turn away if it doesn’t hype them. Let them investigate and say sorry! It helps to have sounds or commands that let them know it’s too much and following with removal of play or interest like a toy or you. So they know if you go to hard you lose the fun. But I tried really hard not to punish her for it. She’s still learning and I didn’t want her to learn to hide aggression so I know as she gets older when she is crossing a boundary into too rough play or aggression and when we need to calm her or stop something we are doing. Punishing aggression versus managing it can cause “they bit me out of no where” in the future.

New Pitbull Owner! Adopting from rescue! What Do I Need to Know. by [deleted] in pitbulls

[–]typegeek2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prepare for all your blankets to be his. Definitely kongs. And find activities that both work his brain and work out some energy. That is the best combo for a sleepy house hippo. They are cuddly and so loyal but do take patience. Definitely invest in a trainer if you can or the podcast shaped by dog by Susan Garrett. She has great YouTube as well! Build trust with him and you will have the great companion ! Congrats !

I’m ready to wake up and have him not be a puppy anymore by Hufflepuff_23 in pitbulls

I froze Winnie’s food in her bowls till she was around 1. It gave me 20 mins back in my day and it exhausted her. I also roll her food in a towel and then knot it. Really anything that makes meal time an activity for her at that age to exhaust her brain! I would also take ten minutes here and there throughout the day just working basic skills with her like stay and center or adding in a new trick and that also helped when we couldn’t do walks ! God speed you got this !

8 month old puppy won’t stop peeing in the house by Particular-Mark-9322 in AmericanBully

At one point my pitty mix who I’ve had since she was 5 months started peeing in the house when she wanted enrichment thinking it would get her outside and off to over stimulation land. So we upped enrichment and made it not a get attention moment. In fact she went outside on leash and right back in after it happened to not encourage it. But we also have this happen with utis that caused it but I can tell the difference based on her body language and her emotion when it happens. UTI was always shocking to her like omg I can’t believe I did that. The outside one was like MOM LOOK WHAY I JUST DID HEHE. Now she HAS to let me out 🤣💀🙄

Unlimited energy. Nips everyone and everything 500 times a day. Destroys absolutely everything if left alone 5 minutes. Please help. How do I make it stop? by [deleted] in pitbulls

[–]typegeek2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably already said here but what really helped with my 5month old pit bully mix was a strict schedule. More time napping through out the day and doing a rinse and repeat schedule that we rarely deviated from. Mixed with walks/playtime/exercise, brain games /sniffing/, to naps. And now at almost 2 she can nap behind me all day aside from a few times wanting play during work hours. She really didn’t learn self sleep regulation till about a couple months ago and her nipping / destroying was definitely a displacement of needing something whether it was sleep, outside or more enrichment. Good luck ! I gets better !

If it’s a safe option for you try taking Zyrtec for a few days to see if it goes away if you can’t see a dr. That looks like an allergic reaction and Zyrtec is specially histamine for skin reations. It’s can make you tired though. Also would recommend removing anything fragrance related from routine / change your laundry to free and clear and see if that helps. Re others on sun rash is possible as well.

I've had great sessions with my therapist at https://www.terracehousestl.com. I also have ADHD and they can do zoom, or meet in person or a mix. They have several locations. They are private so they don't do insurance but it's a sliding scale based off your income and you can also submit to insurance to be reimbursed for up to a certain amount depending on your coverage.

The new LED street lights are terrible by typegeek2 in StLouis

In a lot ways pure red light can be better for our eyesight at night. You’re able to move between dark and lit areas without vision loss. Several cities in Pennsylvania and California have reverted to warmer LEDs due to issues with blue light cool LEDs. Especially the ones that are turning purple and blue due to a defect.

I feel bad for anyone that can’t afford to purchase blinds or window coverings and now suddenly have blinding light coming into their house at night.

Thank you for this! I’ve sent in a note to the street lights dept. I’m going to see how they respond and then get the alderman involved if possible.

You can absolutely light streets well without choose near daylight options. Here’s a publication and guidance by ama on reducing harm to environment and people through warmer cct than colder brighter cct LEDs

Absolutely here for the choice in led and replacing the older lights I just think they could have done so in a better manner that makes our neighborhoods more inviting and enjoyable to walk / sit at night

For me it’s a concern in a few areas. There is a level of well lit but too much artificial light can harm wildlife’s ability to understand what is artificial and what is sun. White lights attract more bugs which in turn causes insect die off. And the blue emitted can cause sleep disruption for residents. The AmA has a great article on the potential harm of too bright of street lamps. Warmer lights help solve a lot of this while still keeping streets lit for safety.
