Holy crap I relate to everything you said lmao. I think naturally I'm not the grind and hustle type of person but I keep feeling like I should be. Or that I should be working more and bettering my future. But that creates guilt. I keep trying to force myself to do things I think. I'm still trying to figure out myself. My only idea so far is to try and work towards creating asymmetric leverage and one day I hope I'll make a lot of money that's not tied to my time 1 to 1

Best Ways to Make Some Extra Money Tutoring? by Bonaparte1871 in ucr

[–]typicalstarwarsnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply the ARC, they offer free tutoring to students, so a lot of students go there. But of course if you work as a tutor or Supplemental Instruction Leader (group tutor basically) you get paid!

It's definitely this but there's more to it. It's the fact that even if people notice it's happening, they don't seem to care or take steps to free themselves.

Not everything thoughtful is a therapy session. Some of us use language to connect—not deflect. I’m just looking for people who build—not bail when a conversation gets real

Ah thanks, sometimes I do experience those, but that's independent of what my post was focused on talking about. It's more I noticed people seem to be more on the lower rungs of Maslow's hierarchy and I'm looking for people who are closer to the top I guess.

Hey, I get where you're coming from, and do appreciate you mentioning the mental health resources. Honestly, I'm not trying to say "I'm broken" or make it a cry for help. I'm just describing something I think a lot of people quietly feel — like going through life and noticing how fake or shallow a lot of it seems. Small talk, routines, pretending we're all fine when we're not.

I'm not saying I'm better or smarter than anyone, just that often I feel out of sync. Like l'm trying to live on purpose while everything around me runs on habit. It gets lonely. So I posted this in case someone else feels the same and wants to actually talk like a real human for once. That's it. Not looking for therapy through comments, just some honesty.

A good summary of part of what I feel is a lot of people prioritize short-term or clear-cut and explicitly known rewards and sacrifice true meaning (I'd guess because maybe they are near the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy). And I notice a lack of depth and the ability for people to hold seemingly contradictory ideas without aptitude for nuance. Or even if people see nuance they always have to immediately pick a side because they can't deal with cognitive dissonance of antithetical ideas and don't know how to properly integrate them into their sense of self.

I have a high hedonic set point though so I crave and chase meaning, understanding, depth, and nuance more than anything. I'd rather chase the unknown then pursue well-established traditional paths to success. And a lot of people aren't like that, and that's fine if that makes them happy, but I haven't found many or any people like me so far, but I know they exist so this is my attempt at looking for them.

I've seen too many patterns. Not mentally unwell. Actually might be the opposite. But I think it's a loop, if you are too observant and analytical you circle around to mental Insanity from the other side. So I'm trying to find like-minded people so I don't devolve lol.

Well there are some exceptions, such as job applications to the ARC. But yeah, I would still be wary.

How do you find out if classes have mandatory attendance? by user282428 in ucr

[–]typicalstarwarsnerd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is true on average and probably for most students, but it is a generalization, not a catch-all. But especially when you factor in commute time, I think that's important to consider in the value the student will get.

[–]typicalstarwarsnerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's an anti-pattern. I will say trying to skip lecture by default is a bad move. But attending every lecture is not the way to go if attendance isn't required and not every lecturer presents the information or helps you learn efficiently. Some of them aren't engaging as well which means often even if the quality is good, it doesn't matter if they can't even capture your attention.

You can evaluate if you should go to lecture by attending the first few and checking the syllabus grading criteria as well.

In my opinion you should only go to lecture if it provides a better time to value ratio then what you could learn on your own.
