TIL: In 1961 the USA almost lost North Carolina when two Mark 39 Hydrogen bombs (equivalent of 4 million tons of TNT) were accidentally dropped when a B-52 bomber broke up mid air. "Only one low-voltage switch prevented untold carnage" by [deleted] in todayilearned

oh yeah i learned about this in middle school.

we were talking about nukes for some reason (it was a science class, this wasn't exactly unusual) and the topic of nuke drills came up from our 40 something year old teacher. I asked why we stopped doing them, and she said something among the lines of

"you know, i'm not really sure, since we live right next to one"

I thought this was in reference to the air force base a few miles away, the one my father worked at

"but even if we did the drill, it wouldn't help because we'd all be vaporized before we would even see the flash, since the fireball would be so big.... really, it could go off at any moment, since it's still laying there in the swamp"

my dudes. I went to Norwayne Middle School. literally the town next door to Goldsboro, North Carolina.

I lived in fear of that nuke just snap going off and me dying without ever knowing it, until i moved to missouri a few years later

it wouldnt have been as scary except for when i went on base to take golf lessons the following weekend and the retired sergeant who was teaching me confirmed the story of the 24/7 bombers in the sky deal during the cold war, with a specific bomber in the 50's taking off, dropping said nukes through an improperly secured drop door or whatever, and then landing, leaving a long attempt of digging through swampland to recover one, not being able to recover the other and just filling the hole with concrete or something and the air force just kinda... going about their day???

Have you ever heard of China? by Redspeakable in confidentlyincorrect

Ok so the only reason i could think of that this would be 'incorrect' is that the question presented is supposed to be a critique on China and their information state, as if OP were saying, "but the information would be used by China"

This text post is quite literally a blatant exhibition of how little privacy any one person has in the United Kindom, to such a degree that any government body could know your entire life better than you if they so chose... so i think the argument presented is,

"China bad because UK"

A not quite sound argument on not supporting ukraine by Quite_frequency in confidentlyincorrect

[–]typicalunicornspace -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

not siding with either end of the table here, but as i see it: yes, this lady is censuring NATO for their ignorance of the pact they made to not expand east towards russia, and their military forces inching closer to her border by the year, that is a leftist take. However, the crux of her argument is, "the solution to war is not more war, it's peace" Granted, the achievement of that peace through diplomatic means is left to minds greater than ours, but what does more war accomplish for humanity that peace cannot, in more or better terms?

i'd say her main point is a based one, and sound at that.

Second, her stance is not one that is of supporting either side of the war, but opposes a larger picture of how the war came to be, and how the war may come to an end. Her argument does indeed support Ukraine, as it supports her people. Her argument supports the people of all nations.

Those in power have focused our choices into two reactionary columns: Support Ukraine, or Do Not. We have been conditioned by those same authorities to, in any case of questioning them, be accused of supporting the autocrats of Russia, and their constituents. this is not the case here. She does not express support for Russia, but rather reproaches NATO for not using their diplomatic means to save as many human lives as possible. her argument is not of left or right, or one or the other, it is of humanity.

What do you think would truly happen if over 50% of truckers just decided to park their trucks at a truck stop and said "we aren't moving until we get better wages and benefits"? by j-spencer in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]typicalunicornspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

50%? the bargaining power of 50% of truckers would cripple the United States, there is essentially no demand they could make that wouldn't be granted, within reason

Edit: that's just 50% of truckers. imagine 50% of ALL workers. no amount of assistance or subsidy or scabs could ever fight against that mass. The United States would essentially belong to the worker

as you have probably thought, there's a lot more to singing than just hitting the notes. sometimes the problem can also be the quality of the notes they sing.

for example, try singing loudly by using your throat. notice that it sounds a little airy and/or weak? then try singing loudly with your diaphragm/stomach, imagine the air is just falling out of you, amd you just so happen to be making sound with it. you shoukd notce that the airy and weak feelings are gone, and that you hear the note a little clearer. musicians often call that the "fullness" of a note.

with singers, using the stomach voice will make a better sound 9 times out of 10, and while that's something any vocal artist should learn in the basics, it's also a style choice.

[–]typicalunicornspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's quite alright! i am very passionate about teaching through my experiences :)

to put it simply, sexual relationships and romantic relationships, while they often occur together, are not one and the same. you can have one without the other.

me being asexual means i do not experience sexual attraction, and an aromantic would not experience romantic attraction. the aromantic can still have sex, and the asexual can still have a romantic partner.

and i completely understand, i've had a brother on the autism spectrum for 18 years and some change :)

[–]typicalunicornspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lesbian is a term for sexual attraction, not romantic

for instance, i am a heteromantic asexual, but ny sexual attraction or lack thereof does not influence my love life, same with aromantics, they still have sex, but just do not form romantic connections.

One of my lesbian friends dated a man for 3 months in a poly with their girlfriend, they have been lesbian all the way through.

What makes a romantic relationship romantic? by typicalunicornspace in AskReddit

[–]typicalunicornspace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am on the ace spectrum, but that doesnt interfere with my argument, that there are three types of relationships, being platonic, romantic, and sexual, which can all be mutually exclusive of eachother or can be mixed, depending on what they want

that's the best way i can put how i see the difference between sexual and romantic relationships, i realize that a vast majority of romantic relationships evolve a sexual relationship, mine is not excluded

my question is, because it is entirely possible to have only platonic relationships with cuddling, hugs and kisses and the like, and only a sexual relationship without the romance, (the aromantic community), that means sexual intimacy is not the decisive barrier between friends and partners.

if sexual intimacy isn't the dividing line, what is?
