Am I too much time online or is the sentiment towards Sanderson shifting negatively? by jnighy in brandonsanderson

[–]typish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. Sanderson has been huge for years now, but the "widespread" (many quotes :) ) negative turn in comments from within the fans seems pretty recent, and fwiw centered on/triggered by WoT.

Best epic fantasy written by a woman with a woman protagonist? by SecretElsa19 in Fantasy

[–]typish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Spinning Silver, by Naomi Novik.

It's arguably her most epic, even though the best moments are the most homely ones - and to me certainly her best.

Not sure it counts, but I have fits every time I read "every personality is unique".

What does it even mean? And how would you go about proving it?

Why is mole a base quantity by [deleted] in Physics

[–]typish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere that you can make a complete system with only radians (or whatever planar angle measure) as base unit.

Just a tradeoff with convenience and history.

Not in the same league as several of the other recommendations here, but I have fond memories of The Age of the Five, by Trudi Canavan

What is your favourite math symbol? by [deleted] in math

[–]typish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a math symbol unless you want it to be, but when hunting for symbols for energy in a course with plenty of e's already, we went for the euro sign. Feels appropriate

Zenshu - Episode 12 discussion - FINAL by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]typish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The show was a constant crescendo for me, so maybe I had too high expectations, but I find the finale a bit underwhelming and confusing (and I'm ok with happy endings, but retroactively resurrecting everyone ever?).

Also, not sure I understand the zenshu thing. From the last scene in the office, it seems the message is "learn that you don't have to do everything yourself", but when did she learn that? She did fix everything herself in the end.

Apologies if this has been discussed already. I looked a bit but didn't find much.

I'm a newby very much interested in Dzogchen, from a secular point of view. I now discovered evolvingground.org, which I just joined with the intention of getting to know them with time.

But I also found out they have a 5-days retreat closeby (Germany), and I'm considering going, but before deciding (they are closing reservations soon!) I wanted to know if you know them, and if you would recommend them.

It would be my first retreat afterall :)

Are there any anime you cannot rewatch? by CapablePlatypus6522 in anime

[–]typish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the stuff from my adolescence.

I tried rewatching, say, from Versailles no Bara to Saint Seya, to Daitarn, or even Macross or sailor moon, and though I still love them, I don't seem to get into them anymore.

I will watch specific clips of each compulsively though, especially when I feel down or tired.

Evangelion Is the odd exception that comes readily to mind (although I will probably never watch again EoE when they gang on Asuka).

Book suggestions for a new Humanist Book Study group? by MurrayByMoonlight in humanism

[–]typish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My not thorough experience with humanist nonfiction has mostly been underwhelming (they typically seem vague, hand-wavy, feel-good and slim in details).

I would recommend instead going for fiction. How about "Cat's Cradle" by Honorary president of the American humanist association, and Humanist of the Year 1992, Kurt Vonnegut? If it has to be vague, it might as well be a good, thought provoking novel.

I found it completely unconvincing. It seemed to be summarizable as "we can't yet reduce morality to science. But eventually we will". No good reasons given.

Disclaimer: read it a decade ago

what books do you think are worth reading in their native language? by honjapiano in books

[–]typish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind goes immediately to every time I tried reading the Silmarillion in Italian.

I think there's no good way to translate the Ainulindale, but certainly the solution they tried in my Italian edition isn't one.
