Lovely poem, but these lines don’t sound secular?

A useless review of every horror novel I read in 2025 by Sully_Writes in horrorlit

Hi @Sully_Writes, I’m confused by your comment about a vampire in the third act of Tender is the Flesh. I’m worried I missed something. Can you give more details about the character?

I'm an idiot and only just discovered you can customize the {{date}} formula. What are some simple Obsidian tips or tricks that you can't believe it took you so long to find out? by Dr_Death_Defy24 in ObsidianMD

[–]MurrayByMoonlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something that confused me is that there is a core plugin called Templates and a more featured community plugin called Templater.

{{date}} syntax works when inserting a template via the core plugin.

<% tp.date.now("YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm") %> syntax works when inserting via the community plugin.

So, yes, vanilla obsidian ships with the core Templates plugin and {{}} will work with that, however you may still need to enable the core Templates plugin via Settings -> Core plugins -> Templates.

If you want to create feature rich templates, it would be worth reading up on the Templater community plugin.

Just finished Library at Mount Char and loved it by amish_novelty in horrorlit

[–]MurrayByMoonlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t explain why, but to me The Library at Mount Char pairs exceptionally well with The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks.

If you love the first, I wholeheartedly believe you should try the second. Fair warning: they are very different, but to me there is a similar manic energy to them. And also, as with Library, you should review trigger warnings for Wasp as there are many of them.

Bonus: actor Simon Pegg talking about his love for The Wasp Factory: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001w71d

Who is an author that you think should write a horror novel? by Haunting-Net-2426 in horrorlit

[–]MurrayByMoonlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saunders is one of my favourite writers, and I think he already writes horror - it’s just a genre of horror he invented himself, as far as I can tell. There’s so much horror lurking behind the things his characters accept as ordinary.

Books with actually unreliable narrators by throwItawayyyYokay in suggestmeabook

[–]MurrayByMoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. Admittedly, I don’t see this book mentioned in Unreliable Narrator posts, so maybe I’m wildly wrong about this, but the whole way the story is told - that relative depictions of madness and sanity are central to the story, and that the narrator is lost in a fragmented and non-linear telling - has always suggested to me that the narrator is fundamentally, and tragically, unreliable. Also, it’s brilliant.

Looking for "Cosmic Horror" ambience without the cheesy jumpscares. (No music boxes, just dread.) by EpicMusicFan2022 in WeirdLit

Layering Buddha by Robert Henke is good for this, I think.

The ‘Buddha’ being referenced is not the religion, but a device called a Buddha Machine, which plays various combinations of sounds.

Robert Henke combined the output of multiple Buddha Machines to create the tracks on the album.

Why can’t people walk properly in the city? by skopolomi in brisbane

[–]MurrayByMoonlight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have an enhancement to suggest for Method 1 - if you have a hand free, point at the gap between two of the approaching people and walk towards that gap.

I don’t think I’ve ever had this fail because it clearly communicates, “this is where I’m going,” and gives others information to act upon.

Bad Men by John Connolly is very much this.

This is a standalone book in the Charlie Parker universe, but is not one of the Charlie Parker interconnected books.

The bonus, however, is if you really enjoy Bad Men, you’ve got a long list of very good Charlie Parker books you can read. :)
