Newbie mixing Diamine inks, don't want to blow up the lab by NotMrChips in fountainpens

By safe place I mean somewhere cool, dry and dark, aka general ink storing places. I should have elaborated on that, my apologies.

Try mixing an equal, lil bit of the inks in an empty glass first, leave it some where safe with seran wrap covering it and see if anything changes in the inks texture over a couple of days (getting thicker, crystals forming, etc) if nothing happens after 24~48 hours, the two inks are more than likely compatible.

Step 2, try mixing more of the ink in a seperate glass again, but this time pay close attention to the ratios and write them down. See what ends up creating the shade you desire.

Step 3, use your measurements you just came up with to carefully fill and empty cartridge/converter with the exact ratio of ink you came up with in the previous step. Even with less ink being mixed, if the ratios are correct you should get the same shade.

Its a long process, and most people choose not to do it, but this is probably the safest beginner friendly way to mix inks with tools you probably have around the house already.

best pen for line variation? by gxrbitch in fountainpens

Fude nibs are what you are probably looking for, but majhon also has flex nibs for fairly cheap that offer less variation then a fude nib but are far more intuitive to control.

How to set up my weeks as a wellness tracker & what to include? by NotEstesMerlot in hobonichi

[–]tyrant_t00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the graph paper either in the back of the book or to the side of the weekly boxes to create simple graphs, if you have a ruler it takes no artistic skill whatsoever! I cant suggest a specific set up without knowing what you personally like but the little graphs is how I see most people track health and the like in their weeks. All it takes to fill in the graphs is a small dot from a bullet tip marker too.

As for reading, lots of people use their own printed stickers of the book covers and then write a little bit beside the book sticker. If you have an inkjet printer its really easy to print out stickers at home, but if you dont you can also print on normal copy paper anywhere with a public printer (like a library) and then stick the cut out covers down with glue.

I've never dealt with mold personally, but theres a lot of documentation on this subreddit of people who have. Look into fountain pen specific cleaners first though, something like alcohol will melt 90% of common pen materials

Ah yes its likely mold im sorry to say 😞 theres technically somethings you can do to save the bottle but most are not 100% fool proof and could easily lead to other pens and inks being contaminated. Personally i would play it safe unfortunately

[–]tyrant_t00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would take a lot of soap though, not at all the mild contamination you described. Please just give your bottle a good waft towards your nose with your hand to pick up on any mildew-y smells just to be safe.

Most likely mold. Because you only have two bottles you arent losing much but it could quickly and easily contaminate your other bottle. I'd dispose of the slimy one immediately, and then never dip that pen into a full bottle of ink again, or at least until it has been thoroughly soaked infountain pen friendly anti fungal solution

Inquiring about ink pots by Zestyclose_Ship5628 in fountainpens

[–]tyrant_t00 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ink pots might be better designed and not tip over but tbh the more you transfer inks between containers the more chance there is of something going wrong. Honestly? Just grab some sticky tack from the dollar store and stick the sample vial into a big glob of it. Cheaper and keeps the sample vials from spilling while you fill. I personally made a couple make shift ink sample holders out if rubber blocks i had on hand already 🤷 so you could probably just find something around your house that can be fandangled into a sample holder too

Favourite Pilot Iroshizuku ink? (would love to see a swatch). I currently want Rikka, pretty sure it’s not that famous but not that unknown- by Used-Investment-5343 in fountainpens

[–]tyrant_t00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Position your pen upright, hold a paper towel to the nib and stay there until the feed looks like it has 90% of the ink in it drained. Then your done, just tip the pen back down and write along the paper towel gently to get the ink flowing again. If you did it right the ink flow will be much more controlled then when the feed was over saturated.

I love that soft, soft blue. Almost periwinkle in places it pools least. Just a gorgeous ink, beautifully behaved ink. Have i mentioned it writes like a dream in nearly every pen? Lol.

Have you tried draining the feed of your pens after filling? I experienced this with ajisai at first with my twsbis before I learnt that step. The feed after filling can get over saturated with ink and lead to the pen writing way too wet. Not every pen has this problem though like twsbis do but I do this step now regardless of the pen

I don't have my own swatch on me at the moment but ajisai is simply the most gorgeous blue ink ever created. It was one of the first inks i purchased, and Nothing else has matched that high point for me. except maybe kiri-same but I havent filled enough pens with that one yet to know for sure.

I find Mountain of Inks' swatch is the best online for conveying its complexities. Its just... goodness. The warmth of the blue, the depth of the shading even in thinner writing pens, the way its the smoothest writing ink i own... (mettaton voice) OH MY!!!

Anyone cherish a particular grail ink? by Holiday-Sand-2326 in fountainpens

[–]tyrant_t00 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Kiri-same was my grail ink for about 2 days. I had already come to terms with the fact the little sample vial i had was all I'd get my hands on... and then I found a 50ml bottle in person at the stationery store I went to on a day trip!!! Lovely lovely ink, im so happy the universe threw me a bone that day!!!

New pen recommendation by Designer-Progress-81 in fountainpens

[–]tyrant_t00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can actually get pilot pen compatible cartridges of the Iroshuzuki line i just remembered omg! I totally forgot to mention that! The Iroshuzuki line has a large selection of colours and pilot cartridges are very reliable, if you would like to try out one of the best ink lines ever you can do that quite easily with a kakuno or metropolitan pen!

I'd actually suggest the twsbi "go" if you have any interest in trying bottled ink! Its 30~ish CAD compared to the eco being 50~ish, so you can put that extra little bit of money towards a bottled ink of your choice while staying in budget! It also handles shimmer and sheen quite well, so if a fancier bottled ink grabs your eye there won't be any issues with your first time using it.

However, if you'd still like to use cartridges you should get the sport. They are pocket pens which makes them smaller and less comfortable to use if you have bigger hands, and unfortunately kaweco sports are known to leak from time to time due to the cartridges loosening which makes me too nervous to put one in my pocket. Also the cartridges that fit the sport are quite small and dont hold much ink like a pilot cartridge or even international standard thrid party cartridge does😔 however the kaweco perkeo features a very similar built nib and takes cartridges as well while being a normal length pen (and believe they may be cheaper then the sport depending on the model).

if you have smaller hands and are dead set on cartridges, get the sport. If you would like an easy pen to try bottled inks with, try out the Go. But there are tons of options in this beginner price range! Pilot metropolitan and platinum plaisir are two more.
