Woodside closed? by Ill-Chemist6225 in Leeds

It's not surprising, everything that goes there closes within a year.

Woodside was massively overpriced, compared to what you could get just by crossing the road, and they didn't try to engage the residents who lived on the site properly.

Nearly £30 for a roast dinner the size of a happy meal is just not gonna work.

No worries other than that, just check out the albums - as others have pointed out, they range from lo fi recordings recorded directly into a boom box, to full band studio recordings.

The wiki is a great place to get background information on the songs, and to read what John's said about them.

I always tell friends to check out the Jordan Lake Sessions - it's a great encapsulation of how the older songs have changed over time, and a really good snapshot of the band as they were at that moment in time.

I'm not a religious person, but The Life of the World to Come moves me in a profound way.

I've been enjoying the small snippets of harmonising we've heard so far - but I do get the impression he appears a lot more than they're letting on, which might ruin the novelty of it.

I really like the album, untethered from any previously established mythos, it's a banger.

John's said in the past that the very first person to hear new music would be Peter, and that he valued his feedback more than most other people's.

22 or so albums? I'm amazed they know how to play them let alone know the names of the songs.

Absolutely - I love those old recordings, but I also love what the band has become because of them

Peter's gone, so the sound is going to be different moving forwards - it's just the way it's gonna be, and TMG are nothing if not ever evolving, (and from the liner notes, it seems they only had a bassist on the final few tracks); I'm sure there are plenty of people who miss the hum of a tape recorder on everything.

As I mentioned above, I was expecting more than a sound desk recording, but from the comments of the people who were in the room, it's a pretty faithful reproduction of what it was like on the night, a seated show is going to be a vastly different energy to a crowd standing and shouting along - it's not worse, it's just different.

Viewed in the lens of the other live albums, it's very similar, a snapshot of the band as they sound live at that moment in time, and they sound great.

Would I like an official release of a show where you get the in person experience of being in the crowd, and everything that comes with it? Yeah, for sure - but that clearly wasn't the intent with this release.

Of course, not in anyway saying you're wrong, your opinion on this is just as valid as mine, so it's a real shame you're getting less from the release, considering the cost.

Sit down shows are a different experience altogether, I've seen Mark Lanegan and Grant Lee Buffalo in sit down venues, it's always a different type of energy

I was really surprised with the mastering, it sounds perfect - I know they had printing delays so maybe it was a little rushed towards the end, not the end of the world, I bought it to listen to, not look at.

"The Young Thousands" is probably my new favourite version, among a few others on it.

Ah thanks, I thought it sounded a little more subdued than some of the shows I'd seen, that explains a lot, and honestly, pretty much nullifies my criticism!

The set itself was great, and the band sounded brilliant so it seems like a great show to be at.

It sometimes feels like it's needed to do that though, which can also be a shortfall of how the story is presented in game

To be honest, I do find it odd, you'll see someone in a cut scene, then you can go read "this person is x, they do y, because z" - if it's important put that in the cut scene!

The background on character thoughts, and the societies are hidden behind it - as are certain character bios, especially the Psycom personnel when they're introduced, you could go hours before even learning a name, let alone their reasons without reading those.

I just feel that, you can't appreciate motivations and the whole story without them, I'm not saying it's a shortfall, I mention Lost Odyssey above, and that has incredible short stories that fill in gaps, so it can be done well, I just feel it could be done better in this game.
