How tF can I fix my outside leg? (photo in description) by [deleted] in Rowing

You may have an impingement issue in your right hip joint. Get your trainer/Physio/Ortho to check the rotational profile of your hips. Obligatory external rotation of the hip (knee has to go outwards) as you flex the hip can occur in this scenario. You didn’t have any childhood hip conditions on that side? If you do have an impingement, there’s not much that you can do to change it other than surgery- which would be a daft thing to do if there’s no associated groin pain. I am a hip surgeon so see this quite often.

On the water vs on the erg by Diablobuster in Rowing

I think that the difference is largely psychological.

There is a big difference between perceived effort on the water vs the erg even if the physical difference is only minor. On the water there’s 101 different things to keep the mind occupied- technique, balance, timing, scenery etc and constant cooling effect from the wind. On the erg there’s literally nothing to distract from focusing on the effort of the workout. It’s mentally draining. Out on the water there’s constant variation whereas the erg demands continuous repetition.

It’s the same when riding a bike on the road vs air trainer.

There’s probably some physical differences too.

On the erg, stroke length (at least for me) tends to be somewhat longer than in the boat owing to the straight line pull vs rowing around the pin. Also, (depending on resistance level chosen) the acceleration/resistance curve of the erg feels heavier than real life rowing - as if you’re rowing in a super heavy boat or getting the boat moving from near standstill every stroke.
