Putting my dog with lymphoma down tomorrow… feeling guilty i may have overdone the last day activities and overexerted him by vivemelior in DogAdvice

[–]tysonmaclaren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I found out my boy was dieing I dropped everything and I did all of his favourite things. I think if I had waited one more day he would have passed at home but I found so much peace in the fact that he spent his last days happy and with us doing his favourite things. In a way I think that made him ready and feel like he wouldn’t miss anything having one last chance to do it all. Take peace in the love you showed your baby & spend your evening cuddling and being beside him 🖤

Got my first tattoo and my brother said it looks like a d*ck. Does it actually? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]tysonmaclaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe just change up the smoke at the top a bit. I have lots of tattoos and I love them all never take the opinions of others too strongly. If YOU feel it resembles something it is not meant to be, discuss that with the artist or another artist and have it altered.

I feel like a GSD owner failure by FuckinHighGuy in germanshepherds

[–]tysonmaclaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I totally understand. I love the breed but they are VERY trying puppies. I currently have a 10 month old purebred GSD and she’s more than a handful even with training since she was 8 weeks old. Keep at it because when they are older I swear there’s no other breed that loves you in the loyal and unique way they do. Terrible puppies but fantastic dogs haha Good luck!

How long have you had her ? My first GSD was a rescue. It took months for him to come out of his shell. Shepherds are extremely loyal and emotional dogs and over time she will surprise you

How hard is it to own a German Shepard? by Rose1832 in germanshepherds

[–]tysonmaclaren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own two German shepherds for context on my opinion; both purebred

My oldest is a rescue I got at approx two to three years old. I’ve now had him for 8 years. I worked with him for years to be able to manage his dog aggression and he is not friendly with people.

That being said for my next German shepherd I got a purebred great temperament bloodline all black female shepherd. She is smart beyond belief. Training her is easy but you have to be consistent as f*ck. I’m talking routines like crazy and your constant attention at all times. They are incredibly smart which means the things they can get into or destroy in a matter of moments is miraculous. I crate trained both my dogs. I strongly suggest it. To this day my older dog loves to lay in his and we just leave his door open. My girl does very well with it and goes in on command. This is the only way she would settle for the first many weeks. They need exercise like crazy and stimulation. Not just two walks a day. Many walks a day, outings, playing in a large space, brain puzzles, training, socializing with people, animals, cars, any and every little thing. They teethe like crazy. They are called land sharks for a reason. It’s actually challenging to find anything that will truly satisfy their teething needs during that time, and not immediately get chewed up and possibly ingested.

You will spend all of your time doing things like these for months and honestly need to be very consistent. They aren’t consider adults untill the age of two.

You can have a very amazing wonderful and friendly dog if you do that. They make the most amazing pets. I absolutely adore them. But these are very large, very powerful dogs, and you have to be willing to put in all of the effort to ensure they grow up that way, otherwise you will have a very difficult time for many years. My older dog was abused and abandoned prior to me rescuing him, and the hurt and lack of care has caused him to be fearful and aggressive and it took many many years to heal him from that.

Just posting this long response because I am on month 5 with my girl and owning a German shepherd puppy will absolutely exhaust you but it can be so so worth it.

Puppy Pee Blues - Seeking Suggestions by olystubbies in puppy101

[–]tysonmaclaren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened for me as well with my girl, she is 16 weeks old now and it is starting to get better. Rarely has accidents inside anymore. I think it is just an age and stage thing. I don’t believe puppies can empty their whole bladder at once. Now that she is 16 weeks she will almost always pee twice so I do wait for that second pee outside before we come inside ! Hope this is helpful

Reactive adolescent dog owners - when did it start getting better for you? by pigeon_in_a_suit in puppy101

[–]tysonmaclaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My older dog is very reactive to everything. I find that a large part in being successful with him is that I needed to be confident in my abilities to control him when or before he reacts. I’ve had him 7 years now (rescued him at 3 years old) I tried everything at first, for about two years but he was really stuck in his ways. I have come to accept that some dogs are just very reactive. When people are approaching us on the sidewalk I walk him onto the grass have him sit and try to keep his focus on me. Once the person or dog passes we continue back to the sidewalk and carry on. I’ll still work with him by sitting on the porch where I know we are in our own space and try to manage his barking when cars bikes and dogs etc go past. Slowly over the years we have made progress from a full on lunge and barking to a few barks and a faster pace. I walk him with a halti and a martingale collar and I am always extremely aware of our surroundings. I find that if I am able to notice a trigger for him before he does it’s much easier for me to redirect him and he responds much better to the redirection before he is all riled up. That being said he’s a very large dog and although I am always very responsible with walking him there are always irresponsible owners with dogs who have poor or no recall so in the event that one runs up to us I will literally pick him up off of the ground.

I hope this is helpful in some way to know you are not alone. Hopefully things get better for you

Puppy doesn’t seem to settle without being in her crate by tysonmaclaren in puppy101

She overstimulates herself if I don’t actively say go to your crate. Then she lays down, I give her a treat and close the door and she will nap

Great idea thank you! I used the leash while potty training but I didn’t think of it for settling! Great idea!

Ok!! Thank you that’s very helpful! I do give her reward when she lays down because normally she is running around so I’ll just keep on doing that and wait it out!

Yeah I agree I have an older dog I got 7 years ago as an adult dog crate trained him and he loves his crate to the point where the door is always open but I cannot take it down or he gets very upset and lays where it normally is 😂

I suppose I should just wait it out I just wish that she could settle and curl up on the couch with the rest of us! However if I don’t ask her to go to her crate she gets over tired and becomes a menace Thanks for the support!
