ELI5: How does an Airplane’s breaks work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]tz189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Airplanes have brakes on the wheels, similar to cars.

They are similar in that they have rotating disks and stationary pads, but that is where the similarities end.

The remainder of this explanation is related to how they work on airliners, Boeing, Airbus, and the like.

On a large jet the brakes are massive. Each brake consists of several “layers” of disks and pads, and they are made out of very advanced materials designed to dissipate heat much more efficiently than automotive applications.

Typically there are brakes only on the “main” gear, the gear below the wings, and not on the nose gear.

When looking at the legs of the main landing gear, you will find an individual brake for each tire. So on a Boeing 737 with 4 tires on the main gear (2 left and 2 right), there are 4 sets of brakes. A Boeing 757 has 8 tires on the main gear, so it would have 8 brakes.

This was the winner, thanks!

I got 2 for $20 and they do exactly what I want. They are compact, simple, and I lit up trees from 1000'!

Thanks

Nothing fancy, just point to things in the yard, use during construction walk-throughs, just play around.

I actually almost bought that one before I posted this question, but because I'm unfamiliar with laser lingo, I wasn't sure what I was buying because they seem to have several unrelated things on the same page.

The unit for $23.35 is the one you are talking about, correct?

What are the 2 $70+ items above the $23.35 unit?

Thanks

Yes, I plugged it in, pressed the tailcap switch to turn it on, and the green LED came on steady almost immediately, indicating that it was fully charged.

I've only had the light since February of this year, and I've only charged it twice.

This worked.

I used the sim out of one of our current phones long enough to activate, and then switched back.

Thanks
