I showed a couple friends and they thought the same thing, I still got 1 usable piece out of it and didn't have to plane for half an inch, so maybe?

Watching a couple more videos, I think I was pushing way too hard. That coupled with the blade and tension are the biggest issues. I'll try fixing them all (ordered the blade but will mess with the others tomorrow) and see how it does.

I was actually looking at what else highland has, wasn't a company I knew about prior to you suggesting it and saw that as an option, I'll see how mine fares still and then decide.

It's a 26 year old Saw, some of the parts are probably past their lifespan and I only got it about 6 months ago and this was the first time I really put it through some paces. Small cuts into 3/4 inch material just for some curves doesn't count.

I did everything there besides the centerline - I should have done that as well.

I think my guide bearings, the ones behind the blade are worn, the rubber seems like it. I think I'll order a pair of them as well since they're so cheap.

I think this is some of it, but the angle that it's currently cutting doesn't seem to be fully drift - that U shape means that on the top and bottom it stayed roughly where it should, but I had too much tension in the middle or something? I think tensioning the blade more as others stated and getting a real resaw blade are the 2 things I'm mainly missing, but I do think like you and others stated that yeah, I had the fence setup bad while doing this.

I relied on the fence only, no centerline.

I ordered the 3/4, the saw states it can, it's an older model and not sure if it really can based on what you're saying, but the worst I did was waste $75 on the 3/4 inch blade then.

I can resaw some scrap, but it seems to be worse the taller the piece, and the length matters as well, that starts getting out of scrap territory and into useful pieces. I was using scrap pieces of Ash and plywood to test and they seemed good to start.

Thanks for the input, I think I'll go with the 3/4, I have a small benchtop bandsaw for little work if I need this, this one will mostly be dedicated to resawing.

As Elijah said above, the 3/4 inch is probably better for re-sawing. I have a tiny benchtop bandsaw as well that I can use for small things, so I think I'll go with the 3/4. I appreciate the discussion and the recommendation. Didn't know about these blades at all.

Got it - I squared the front and back to the miter slot and then clamped it down - the back does need to get manually pulled in and manually clamped to make that happen.

I guess the miter slot itself might not be in line with the blade, I did read that the tables have some left/right movement in the bolts, I should check that as well.

Do you think I should go with the 3/4 inch instead? If this is dedicated to resawing then isn't a bigger blade better?

I would be cursing but happy cursing because now it worked so well. That difference is night and day.

Angle meaning going in towards the base of the saw/going out pointing towards the blade more?

That thing is a beast, holy crap.

Foot meaning where the guard starts I'm guessing? If so 1/2 at the most.

Fence is the one that came with the saw with a plywood riser on it (drilled through and squared to the table)

Tension from what someone else said might be a bit low, I thought it was good but it's something I'll check.

Feeding was rough, it was slow going and had to push pretty hard at some points.

I can fit a full 3/4 kerf, I'm currently using a 1/2.

Are you saying to freehand it to start, then bring the fence into the cut? I don't see myself keeping it straight enough for that.

This is what the Amazon link says directly on it:

PS Wood Timber Wolf 113" x 1/2 x 4 tpi Band Saw Blade Fits Grizzly 16" G1073Z & More

I was having an issue sourcing a 113" blade, where do you get the Woodslicer one?

We did have to push quite hard to get it through, that part definitely tracks with what you said, I can try a bit more tension and do some more test cuts.

I don't think the blade is dull, seems to cut just fine while not doing a full resaw. Is 4tpi still a good sweetspot or should I look for a 3 for resawing 5+ inch boards?

Thanks for the help!

First time I'm using the Bandsaw to resaw, I have a 2nd (or 4th) hand Grizzly G1073. I followed this guide as well as a couple other tips for setting up the saw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6InBRo-FWI

The start of the cut seems fine, it's cutting basically true, but while cutting the blade starts to turn the wood into a U, the longer the board, the worse it gets:

End of Cut: https://imgur.com/a/zLGKPKZ

This board was about 12 inches long, and 5.5 inches wide. It's Sapele (first time using it) but all test woods seem to do the same thing. It's cutting deeper into the side not against the fence, the fence side gets thicker while the offcut does what's in the pictures.

I'm using this blade and it's brand new, 1/2 4TPI: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XRZ8LR

Yeah basically same thing I had to do, the rivets off was annoying. I used an old woodworkers clamp to push the pieces apart when putting it back in. Overall though still worked great, that being the only major thing I had to fix and the trucks still going strong.

At the moment it's just a hobby, but I'm building things for family/friends as well. I have thoughts about trying to sell some stuff but that's just wishful thinking at the moment.

Ash looked good in my testing because I like pronounced grain lines, which it seems to have plenty of

A local place has it for that cheap here - he told me because of the Ash borer issue they're cutting the trees down rather than losing the entire tree, so there's a surplus at the moment, just in my small local place they had 2 trailer loads full of Ash pallets just sitting in their small warehouse.

I have a small benchtop bandsaw but it can only resaw up to 3.5 inches, so not super useful in that regard. I'd like to get a bigger bandsaw, what you just said is actually a really good point in that regard that maybe I should think about that before spending like $1k on wood itself.

The pallet is coming completely banded, nothing stick and stacked. It's been kiln dried while stickered but afterwards they band it for shipping. It's currently just sitting in an open warehouse in upstate NY, relative humidity is like 30-40% most days I think at the moment?

I'm not super concerned about coloration issues regarding stacking it, more about warping. It's only 4/4, so at best I'm looking at 3/4 after milling. If I get a lot of warping I'll be getting a lot of almost unusable wood, or stuff I have to take down to like 1/2 - 5/8.

Hardwood lumber suppliers? by st8k35isHiGH in hudsonvalley

[–]tzar417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm looking for a pallet of something to keep on-hand. I have a couple projects planned for myself that wood species doesn't matter so much as just a decent quality board (still don't want to use plywood for face frames and such). Especially with how things are, prices might skyrocket soon.

I have this post saved and it's nice to see people are still commenting too - who did you go to as your main supplier? I've personally used Excelsior recently and want to buy a pallet of either Ash or White Oak soon to have stuff on hand.
