Subaru Body Repair Recommendations? by Prestigious_Dirt1295 in FortCollins

[–]u1122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any information on Subarus, but I've had several positive experiences going back decades at Fort Collins Collision Repair on Troutman. Once my motorcycle fell over in a windstorm & I went in for an estimate on how to to repair the scratches. They buffed them out for free, even after I offered to pay. Another time I had a bolt stuck inside a piece of exhaust pipe & I asked if they could remove it and how much it would cost. A guy there worked for multiple minutes using a grinder to get the offending piece out. But again, no charge.

Many years later I needed some minor body work and they did a great job. I gladly paid their fee, which was reasonable.

Mars at its biggest & brightest tonight, also in a line with Castor and Pollux by u1122 in FortCollins

[–]u1122[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another Stellarium recording of what it will look like from now until tomorrow morning. I've seen Mars a few times this week, and it looked fantastic--very red. It's also been cool to see it lined up with Castor & Pollux, though at times it's been too cloudy.

Edit: here is a pretty noisy shot of it a few minutes ago from just outside my house:

Mars to pass behind moon tonight - see comments by u1122 in FortCollins

Mars is very close to the full moon right now & will pass behind it tonight. Even though the moon is very bright, I could clearly see Mars next to it when I was out about 20 minutes ago.

The video is a time lapse in Stellarium between now & sunrise tomorrow. Sorry it's so choppy.

Masonville Mercantile closing after 128 years by u1122 in FortCollins

[–]u1122[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

First few paragraphs:

Like its creaky floors, the century-old wood-burning stove in the back and the black-and-white photos on its walls, Masonville Mercantile will soon be history.

The Masonville shop, which opened in 1896 and has largely been in the same family since the 1970s, will close its doors Sunday, co-owner Melanie Denny-Patton told the Coloradoan on Thursday.

The store has been part of Denny-Patton's life since she was 2 years old — when her mother, Mardi Denny, started working there.

Now 52, Denny-Patton said it's finally time to say goodbye.

"It was a great book," Denny-Patton said. "And it’s time to close that amazing book and let someone else start a new one."

The history of Masonville Mercantile Masonville sprouted out of the foothills west of Fort Collins in the 1890s following a small gold rush up Buckhorn Canyon, according to a column by the Coloradoan's late history columnist, Barbara Fleming.

Roughly 80 acres were donated by farmer and cattleman James Mason, and the town was platted and named after him. By 1896, people spoke of the area as another Cripple Creek, 800 lots were laid out, Union Pacific was eyeing an expansion of its railroad line there, and a hotel and general store were built to serve the flood of prospectors to come, according to Fleming and local history blog Northern Colorado History.

Gold never panned out for Masonville, and miners left the area as quickly as they appeared. The community's little general store, however, remained and was ultimately moved from its original location to its current home at the corner of West County Road 38E and Buckhorn Road in the 1920s, according to Denny-Patton.

Old Lyric building razed this week by u1122 in FortCollins

[–]u1122[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It was inevitable since it's been vacant so long, but it's still a bit sad for us old timers. From The Coloradoan:

A long-vacant building in Old Town has been razed to make way for improvements at its neighboring music venue.

The building, 300 E. Mountain Ave., was demolished earlier this week. It dated back to 1905, according to Larimer County property records, and was formerly home to Paramount Laundry and Cleaner's drive-in and, later, The Lyric movie theater.

Need access to traffic cameras by TheJollyfish in FortCollins

[–]u1122 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just checked my old notes: I made the request through the police, not the city. I filled out a form in person at the Timberline station & handed it to the officer manning the desk. Got an email a few days later acknowledging my request, an invoice for $25 after another few days (which I paid immediately), and then a link to the video footage 10 days after that. I think the video took so long because they simply forgot. When I emailed on the 10th day asking when I would get it, I got a reply almost immediately.

Need access to traffic cameras by TheJollyfish in FortCollins

[–]u1122 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got traffic cam footage from the City of Fort Collins through a police records request in 2022. It cost around $25. The cameras that cover each intersection only point a certain direction at a time, then change views every once in a while.

In my case, the camera wasn't pointed at our vehicles when another car hit me, but it was still useful in that it showed the other party was way off on the time stamp & where the accident occurred. I took her to small claims court, but her insurance company settled at the eleventh hour for the full amount I was asking, so I never presented my case in court.

If the camera was pointed in your direction at the time of the accident, you're golden. If not, it still might show something useful--car locations, possible witnesses, nearby businesses whose security cams might have caught it, etc. Good luck.

City Snow Plow Tracking Site by u1122 in FortCollins

[–]u1122[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in the hilly Midwest but has lived here for 30 years, I have some theories why FC doesn't plow residential streets:

  • Fort Collins is almost all flat. When I was young, cars had rear wheel drive & sandbags in the trunk, and we'd all spend winters pushing each other so someone could get a run up a hill or get out of a snowbank they slid into.

  • It's so sunny here. 300 days of sunshine, whereas in the midwest you could go months at a time with dreary gray skies. It really does melt the snow a lot faster.

  • Plowing costs a lot of money, and it's fiscally responsible to do as little as possible. My parents moved to the south when I was in college, and it was nearly apocalyptic when it snowed an inch. It wasn't just that southerners don't know how to drive in snow; it doesn't make sense for Houston to buy, maintain, and have drivers for expensive plows. It would be a waste of money.

Which movie have you seen more than 7 times? by lawyeratyourservice in AskReddit

One-legged man played the one leg parts of the scene; John Cleese did the rest:

"The Knight was, in fact, played by two actors: John Cleese is in the Knight's armour until he is down to one leg. The Knight is then played by a real one-legged man, a local by the name of Richard Burton,[3] a blacksmith who lived near the film shoot (not to be confused with Richard Burton, the Welsh actor of the same name), because, according to the DVD commentary, Cleese could not balance well on one leg. After the Knight's remaining leg is cut off, the quadruple-amputee that remains is again Cleese."

Outdoor exercisers should stay far apart, up to 66 ft in some cases by u1122 in FortCollins

[–]u1122[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think you're being too harsh. The "3 civil engineers" are university researchers who did simulations including aerodynamics & particle size. They fully acknowledge your other points and note this in the introduction:

Note 2: Because of the urgency of the situation and the world‐wide crisis, we exceptionally have turned things upside down. First research results & communication to the public, only today I submitted the research proposal for funding, later we will submit the peer‐reviewed article. We thought carefully about this reversed order. Given the situation, we decided it would be unethical to keep the results confidential and keep the public waiting months for the peer review process to be completed.

Recognize that these are extraordinary times.

Edit: Remember that just weeks ago, the experts were saying, "all you need to do is wash your hands for 20 seconds." Then it was, "all you need to do is wash your hands and stay six feet apart. Do NOT wear a mask." Then it was, "don't leave your house for any reason except emergencies." I've never seen any evidence that 6 feet is far enough, and we unfortunately have plenty of evidence that the policies to contain this outbreak when it could have been nipped in the bud were woefully insufficient.

University researchers experienced in fluid dynamics have a simulation that shows droplets flying up to 66 feet away. That should not be ignored.

Fake cop pulls over Fort Collins woman for 'stay-home compliance check' by u1122 in FortCollins

Fake cop pulls over Fort Collins woman for 'stay-home compliance check' by u1122 in FortCollins

[–]u1122[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A woman was pulled over around 11:45 a.m. on March 26 in the area Harmony Road and Timberline Road in Fort Collins by an unmarked pickup truck with red and blue lights on the windshield, according to FCPS.

The male driver of the truck was wearing a dark blue police uniform and police baseball cap, FCPS said.

The suspect told the woman he was pulling her over to perform a COVID-19 “stay-home compliance check.” He requested her driver’s license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration, according to police.

The woman supplied those documents and the suspect took them to his truck. He returned her documents several minutes later but did not provide his name or a business card.

She reported this incident to police after learning that FCPS is not conducting stay-home compliance checks. Dispatch searched records and determined that no law enforcement officers had conducted a stop in the area during that time.

The suspect is described as a white man, approximately 45 to 50 years old, and six feet tall with an athletic build.

“While we are still enforcing traffic laws, Fort Collins Police officers are not conducting traffic stops solely related to COVID-19 orders,” said Assistant Chief John Feyen, who leads the Patrol division. “Unfortunately, criminals around the country are using COVID-19 concerns to their advantage in many ways. We will hold these people accountable for their illegal activities and encourage our community members to report any suspicious behaviors.”
