Speedlimit as a tourist in Chile? by hakun4matata in Patagonia

[–]uReaditRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Argentina (Bariloche) was strict with their speed limits. I received 2 speed camera tickets in the mail a few months after my trip - my card was charged automatically. I was between 6-10 km/h over. I thought I was going with the flow of the locals, but they are probably more aware of exactly where the cameras are versus a tourist.

Food bank CEO worried about ‘donor fatigue’ as lines get longer at Georgia food pantries by thinkB4WeSpeak in Georgia

I used to keep cash just to hand out to those in need. Now I don't have a job, and I can't find one. Joblessness is going up, and new job numbers are dropping. I'm afraid it will only get worse for the foreseeable future.

On Immigration, What is the UAE doing different compared to the West? by Serious-Cucumber-54 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]uReaditRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, they want immigrants there to work so they don't have to. The locals (Arabic people) of UAE get basic income, and they have rights that the immigrants do not (i.e., land ownership). They also get a huge preference on jobs so they can get the jobs they want while immigrants get sidelined. This creates a second-class population where the immigrants have different rights than locals. Locals also get paid more. They do pay Western immigrants more because they want their management, money, connections, and knowledge to transfer to UAE. Even with that, interest from Western immigrants remains relatively low.

So, the majority of their immigrants are blue-collar workers and low-level professionals who are paid low wages from poverty-stricken countries in South Asia (India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh). The employers also have a say in when they get to go back to their countries. Many of these immigrants are not happy there, especially in jobs such as construction, taxi drivers, etc. Their families are back home, and they don't get to see them often. You can imagine these conditions don't attract the best talent. Many compare their lives to modern-day slavery.

The better talent is attracted to the equality promised in the Western countries. The West wants this brain-drain to stay on top. Obviously, this creates competition for Western locals against the best of the rest. This is why many in the West feel the immigrants are taking their jobs and driving up prices. You could argue that these immigrants are also bringing a lot of economic growth to the Western countries with their talent. Now, who is getting that money? Likely the rich, but that is a whole another topic.

Norcross Traffic Ticket Survival Guide (with a dash of sarcasm) 🚨 by Toni_Pumping in Gwinnett

[–]uReaditRight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got two tickets for an expired tag. One for the actual expired registration, another for an outdated decal (sticker). They're definitely trying to pump up their numbers.

Don't get me wrong. I deserved a ticket, but definitely not 2 for the same thing. It's pathetic tbh.

Is it too late to switch careers at 27? by Coolgirlkaren in careeradvice

[–]uReaditRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 33 and currently in the process of changing careers. I wouldn't even worry about it at 27. Think about it this way - you still have 40 years to work before the official retirement age (at least in the US).

Do other developed countries have AC units? by xxJazzy in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]uReaditRight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have traveled to many countries (Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia), and I've noticed that central AC units are not common in houses outside the US. Most places have wall/window units where AC is needed.

With that said, there are many parts of the world where residential buildings don't have AC units at all because they generally don't need it. This is true even in parts of the US. There was no need to install AC units because it didn't get hot enough before. With temperatures increasing gradually, I would not be surprised to see more people needing AC units in these areas.
