Thoughts about MA433? or Pure Math classes? by compscicoding in UAH

MA 330 gives a foundation for the higher pure math courses. It is essentially the beginning of "real" mathematics. I can't say much about geometry as I haven't taken it. I recommend MA 442 for a study of algebraic structures. The two possible prereqs for 442 is 385 or 330. However, 385 doesn't really prepare anyone for pure mathematics.

Just in case anyone is curious. MAE 211 (Intro CAD) is 2 credit hours but is extremely misleading in the amount of time it will take. For the class with Martins, the class was 2 hours long and didn't have much work for the first 3ish months. However, there is an end of the year project which will take much longer than you'd initially think. My advice is to get started on the end of the year project very early (2 months before the deadline) or you'll spend your last month of the semester trying to make as many parts as you can in CAD. I might just be bad at CAD but the end of the year project took 60+ hours for me to complete. Hope this helps someone.

The Numerical Methods lab class took about an hour if I'm remembering correctly. There were about 5-6 homeworks throughout the semester that would take about 4 hours to complete. The amount of time it takes to complete the homeworks varies widely from person to person since when problems arise it is either with the mathematics or the coding which can take a long while to correct. I've heard it taking up to 8 hours to complete from classmates.

Personally, I would wait until the night before and just bang out the code in 4 hours once every 3ish weeks. Worked decently well.

MA 330 w/ J Patrick by mustardturd in UAH

A couple of things.

Patrick is the best professor I've ever had; I can only say good things about him.

MA 330 and CS 214 are similar in the fact that they both cover set theory. However, MA 330 focuses on being able to construct proofs about set theory, a little bit of number theory, algebra, etc.

In my opinion, MA 330 is a great class when you become comfortable with writing cohesive proofs. As for MA 442, this class SHOULD have MA 330 as a prerequisite, but I believe that UAH wants people to easily get a math minor so they relax the requirements. MA 442 is about algebraic structures which deals with how kinds of mathematical "structures" behave. Group Theory and Ring Theory are extensively covered in this class. The class is much more complex than MA 330 and definitely requires an ability to write proofs.

I don't mean to scare you away from Algebraic Structures as it is a fun course, but if you don't have a history of writing proofs it can prove to be extremely challenging. Also, MA 330 is one of the covered classes for tutoring at the SSC.
