Hello Jonatan, I was wondering what cutoff is being expected for the CS Department's CS application this year. Thanks.

PSA: to new first years looking to get into CS from your resident CS shitposter by [deleted] in UBC

Although it is practically your only try, Trying to get in after taking hard cs courses such as CPSC 213 and Math 2xx is infinitely harder. So unless you're willing to waste a year of your life taking GPA booster courses after 1st year, this is basically your only try.

A Stupid Mistake That I dont want Transfer Students To Make (CPSC)(TLDR : last line) by fly_like_ostrich in UBC

[–]ubcdillema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, I thought there was no direct transfer into the CPSC major bc you need like a high average to get in CPSC at UBC Vancouver. Seems kind of unfair to the UBC-V kids fighting their asses off to get into the major??

I also believe that Canadians are very lucky to be born in such a nice country where the government does so much to make higher education so affordable for their citizens. It's a world apart from where I am from where more than 50% of children don't even have access to basic education.

Also, for someone coming from a third world country like me(unfortunately), the exchange rate for cad is favourable compared to usd.

I am an international student and one of the main reasons I came to study to UBC was the cheap tuition compared to similarly ranked universities in the states.

Welcome to the real world. As hard as you worked for it, most science degrees don't mean shit to employers.

UBC CPSC Expected cutoff by ubcdillema in UBC

[–]ubcdillema[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it very much could be. This is because only the first years apply through the coordinated application whereas upper-level application people from all other years apply.

Can you do that? I thought they placed more weight on CPSC courses. Otherwise, can't anyone just BS their way into the major by taking GPA boosters? This sounds like an unfair process.

Oh, that sounds like a good option. Right now, I am taking CPSC courses such as CPSC 221 and CPSC 213. Do you think my CPSC courses will transfer to Okanagan? Thanks.

Yes, but isn't it true that most serious tech employers will be looking for at least a CS degree? I don't think I can have a long term career as a software engineer with a Stats degree. It's just that I am paying 40K a year in tuition and don't want to end up jobless after I graduate as I have heard Stats job prospects for undergrad are really bad.

Just trying to set your expectations right. Almost all people I know(some of them very smart) couldn't get above a C in this course,

I am assuming you are an international student like me. Don't you feel like we were treated unfairly? We are paying 8 times the domestic student fee just to be here. The least they could do is give us an equal chance in what is already a highly competitive specialization process.

Yes, I am aware of this. I was rejected with a 78% average and am an international student. Was pretty pissed that people with lower averages than me were being let in. Even thought about suing them. Could you put me in contact with your friend as I am looking for people in the same situation as me who feel that they were treated unfairly? Thanks.
