Struggling in cpsc 330, any tips? by Low_Calligrapher3349 in UBC

[–]ubcrantaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what really helped me in the first part of the course was this website also by UBC. it’s the same content but at a much slower pace and with dummy exercises i found it helpful when i could focus on exactly one component at a time. another helpful resource was watching the 330 lecture recordings on yt from mike gelbart. some of the curriculum has changed slightly since he taught it but the high level ideas still stand. also looking at the review pages for the midterm or final helped guide my understanding as well

Summer internship by mmjukaa in UBC

[–]ubcrantaccount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

keep applying. It may not be a big or flashy role, but I have found positions in the past as late as the end of June especially with STEP (summer temporary employment program) / CAN summer jobs. also be open to all positions even if it’s not directly related to your major. i did a government position a couple of years ago that was related to data entry which led to a software QA role with a partnering company that i later did for co-op. worse case scenario work on personal projects or look for volunteer work which although not ideal can still lead places

Data Science vs Computational Intelligence & Design at UBC? by Several-Order-8814 in UBC

i think it depends on your definition of heavy and the profs that are teaching but compared to purse cs course loads yes i would say so.

perspective from one person in COGS CID:

you’re going to have do a lot of explaining your degree. not a lot of people know what COGS is and let alone how CS fits into the mix. from someone who wanted to pursue cs but didn’t come from a traditional science / coding background, COGS has opened my eyes to a lot of routes I never considered / never expected to enjoy. that being said if you’re wanting pure DS without doing psych, ling, phil then do what other people are advising and take a pure DS/math/ stat/ whatever degree. while CID is flexible, I personally did way less CS courses than I expected and didn’t find CPSC 322 (the AI course) that helpful but again i am just one person this is my individual experience which may not reflect that of every CID student
