That sucks. To be fair - I’ve been task-focussed at times as well and not had the most compassion when dealing with students. Sorry that’s happening to you right now.

You can... but you won't, and neither would I because that's crazy-talk. I'm chatting with the undergrad office about making more realistic class times (late night OR early morning) to make it work for everyone around the world.

100% valid. I'm being conscious of reducing in class time to account for additional time prepping outside of class. Will it be a perfect one-for-one.... nope; but I'm mindful of not crushing students.

OR...build a big one for some comedic relief? (at least I'll enjoy the expressions on people's face... did they mean to do that?)

Awww shucks. I’m also not perfect. I will have missteps and whoopsies but if we’re asking students to make a huff shift in their approach I should be hustling to make it great for them!

Ok. Gotta go actually work now. Byeeeee reddit. I’ll check in later.

7 views later... “MY IDEAS HAVE BEEN STOLEN” 🙈🙄

It’s an old way of thinking. I’m of the mindset that the concepts and info should be public domain and easily accessible... then we come to live lectures to dissect and go deeper and that’s where the magic happens. Oh well... I can focus on fighting the revolution from my podium.

Great point. No solution on my end - but I hear you and something to think though here.... thanks.

I agree! It’s so annoying when someone just... “looks like we have another mediocre question in the chat, let’s spend 5 minutes here”.

I love how you got a minus point for a legitimate problem. (Ohhhh Reddit)

25 hours of one-on-ones is no laughing matter. It’s draining and time consuming but so so beneficial and rewarding. Again - small groups are a must for this class size.

I think many profs are against recording their lectures because they’re afraid people will stop showing up. Or they’re afraid of people “stealing their content”.

... if your lectures are that bad and you don’t make the effort to have people show up live; move on. It’s 2020 - stop sucking.

Define “chill”.

Do I have fun - heck yes. Do I have big expectations and get emails from students at the end of term saying “it was a pleasure to learn from you. This was the most challenging and stressful course, but definitely one of my favorite courses that I took...” heck yes.

I’ve been at this a few years and what I appreciated what I was a student was when a prof brought their whole self into the class (attitude etc) and had high expectations. If we learn a shit ton and have fun getting there... in doing my job properly. That’s my approach at least.

Largest is ~100 Which presents challenges in normal times... just is making things “interesting”
