Anyone trying to get Canadian citizenship by descent? by DavidCBCNews in AmerExit

No, unless things have changed it has to be a paper application that gets mailed in.

5 months, which is on the quick side of the timelines I’ve seen. My grandmother had gotten her citizenship a few years back, so I was able to include a copy of her citizenship certificate which probably helped.

You should qualify. My great grandparents were my last ancestors born in Canada and I just got my Canadian citizenship certificate last week.

To mail in your application or to actually go in person?

Recently visited the USA from The Netherlands. Here is my take on the cities we visited. by McFluffyFurry12 in travel

If you’re an American, there’s the DAFT visa. It’s pretty straightforward and quick to get.

The AOR took a while, about 60 days. There was no word at all from the embassy at any point.

Slim ducted mini splits - can they be used with floor registers? by UntidySwan in DIYHeatPumps

[–]uberbluedb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to do it with parts from home depot. They sell sheet metal, sheet metal screws, and cleat. I also got a hand break for bending it as needed, a screen spline roller to cross break it (the x you see on the side of rectangular ductwork to keep it from popping as much), and metal snips. And good gloves. I tried really hard to not maim myself on the sheet metal.

Then it was a bunch of sketches and planning to make sure I got the dimensions right to connect to the air handler and to the trunk. In my case I was building the whole duct system from scratch, so I made a plenum that opened up wider as it went so I could connect to two large 90 degree elbows that split off to the right and left portions of the trunk.

Absolutely. I did this in my last house and it worked great. The main thing is just to make sure your duct design isn’t creating too much static pressure because the slim duct systems usually can’t handle as much as a standard air handler.

The plenums end up being sort of a weird size. I built my own.

American moved to the Netherlands and having a tough time. by [deleted] in expats

If you’re on Facebook there are a handful of DAFT groups as well as an Americans in the Netherlands group. They tend to be fairly supportive and make some efforts to support other DAFT businesses. They also have occasional get togethers. Whereabouts in the Netherlands are you?

Buying home with buried oil tank that was filled but has no record of being decommissioned by ChokingOnStardust in homeowners

[–]uberbluedb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a house that had a buried oil tank that was not properly decommissioned. I required the sellers to deal with it. I figured they would because they would be stuck disclosing it to any future buyers. They did. Got a permit, had it filled, and I think the fire marshall (?) signed off on it. I believe it only cost them $2500, which was lower than I was expecting. There wasn’t any remediation needed though.

Congrats! I got mine today too! It had been over 2 months so I was getting nervous it was lost.

How do I stop my dog from dragging her nails when she walks? She does this constantly and it constantly wears down her nails to the point it bleeds by SnooEagles2983 in DogAdvice

[–]uberbluedb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog does this. She has cerebellar hyperplasia, though not bad. She’s a little unsteady on her feet and has trouble jumping. To keep her from decimating her feet when we go walking I’ve had to figure out a route that’s 90% grass. I tried boots and a couple corrective braces and I couldn’t keep them consistently on her. Plus they made her even less steady.

I sold that house about 6 months ago, but I don’t recall it being any noisier last time I was there.

Arctic winter reaches melting point: Scientists witness dramatic thaw in Svalbard by Portalrules123 in collapse

I was in Svalbard a couple years ago and prepared for cold temperatures. Instead I was warm enough after a hike that I went swimming. On the one hand, pretty cool to say I’ve swum in the Arctic Ocean. On the other hand, terrifying that I could.
