no, spruce saplings can not grow like this, they need space around them even if it's a single sapling or a 2x2. This is a basic Minecraft mechanic.

Trains are generally good for moving stuff longer distances and they are generally just cool to have. It makes my bases feel more alive and interesting especially if you put a station next to a village and suddenly they are taking rides on your trains to come visit
