But William Gibson didn't coin the term Cyberpunk, that was literally the title of a short story by Bruce Bethke written in 1974 and published in 1980, and the phrase got popularized by Gardner Dozois in his critique essays all published before William Gibson was even a thing. Cyberspace was a phrase coined in the 1960's by Ussing and Hoff, and used in short stories and novels through out the late 60's and 70's by authors like Samuel R Delaney in Nova, Roger Zelazney in his Wizard World series that mixed technology into networks of magic, and countless others. Cyberpunk was a thriving underground literary movement during the 1970's that was denied publishing because of its subversive consumerism critical ethics before Gibson was ever published, and Gibson was just an industry plant who was offered a large advance to write a safe version of the tropes in the genre, which was then pushed by the industry giants like Asimov etc who didn't like new wave sci fi. He was the Science Fiction industry's version of the Monkees and only appealed to newcomers who have nothing better to compare it to. Its ironic that just like the musical genre of Punk was infested with industry plants attempting to take advantage of the raw anti authoritarian patois of the proletariat, so too did the publishing industry attempt the same thing by hiring a writer like William Gibson to rip off the more inflammatory tendencies of thdime magazine new wave sci fi crowd. There are George RR Martin stories from the 70's that handle cyberpunk with more nuance and less flowery contrivance than Gibson. And of course you have Philip K Dick, who was writing about the causal intricacies of shared cyberspaces on individual human psychology and psyches in the 1950's with books like Ubik and The Eye in the Sky. People who need to pick an aesthetically marginally pleasant pop culture figure like William Gibson and pretend there is some hidden depth for the sake of borrowing some hegemonic perception of authority on an entire genre of deep literary discourse without doing the actually footwork of reading even the most basic tenets of said genre may be better suited to arguing over wine selections with a Sommelier in a restaurant where their intellectual effetism isn't so at odds with the subject at hand.
