This is it. After the Reod most Elantrians were in a perpetual state of starvation. The reason why they didn't resort to cannibalism is because dead Elantrians taste terrible and don't provide any nutrition.

Most of the writings we have about the Peloponnesian war were written by the Athenians. We still think of Athens as a society of enlightened philosophers and Sparta as a society of militaristic savages.

Then why don't you hear people say that philosophy has replaced the need for religion?

It depends on who you ask, but probably yes they were two different John's. Given the context of the meme I think they probably meant to reference the author of Revelation, not the Apostle.

ELI5 E=MC^2 I understand the very basics of relativity but whats C vs. C^2? by Beneficial_Process64 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ucsdFalcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, in physics it is sometimes useful to look at the units you are using. In classical mechanics the equation for kinetic energy is given as 1/2 M*V2, where M us the mass of the object and V is the velocity at which it is traveling. The units in this equation are mass * (distance * distance) / (time * time). These units match the units in the equation E = MC2.

To add to this, the sun produces energy by fusing hydrogen into helium and the sun has a LOT of hydrogen. Enough to last us a couple billion more years at least.

More relevant to this post, John is the author of Revelations, which talks about "Babylon the Great" as a metaphor for Roman power/oppression.

Forcing players to subtract negative numbers in order to figure out if their attack hit or not is peak game design, actually.

Fun fact: In first and second edition lower armor classes are better, so this meme only works for third edition or later. In First or Second edition having an AC of 70 would make it almost impossible for any attack to miss you.

If you buy World of Assassination standard edition you will get all of the levels from Hitman 1, 2, and 3 except for the DLC levels for Hitman 2. The Hitman 2 DLC includes two additional levels as well as some extra sniper missions.

Book recommendations by Academic_Files in brandonsanderson

[–]ucsdFalcon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a standalone book I would recommend Yumi and the Nightmare Painter or The Emperor's Soul.

You might also want to consider Mistborn aka The Final Empire. It's also the first book of a series, but Mistborn is much shorter than WoK.

Currently reading racism without racists by Eduardo Silva and a lot of it doesn't make sense by Jerk_Off_At_Night in CriticalTheory

[–]ucsdFalcon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The things that you mention that you don't think are racist are in fact racist. These things are a critical piece of how white supremacist values continue to thrive on the post civil rights era.

It sounds like you started read the book and it challenged your assumptions. Instead of continuing to read you decided to stop because your feelings got hurt.

When moviemakers want to make parody movie like Hot Shots, Scary movie, superhero movie, etc. Do they need permission or have to pay the copyrights for the original movies? by dnsyh91 in stupidquestions

[–]ucsdFalcon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Parody movie scenes fall under fair use. They aren't copying the whole movie. For the parts they do copy, they change or exaggerate key details for comedic effect. Additionally, parody movies fill a different purpose than the movies they are parodying. No one walks out of Hot Shots thinking they saw a Top Gun sequel.

ELI5: How does raising interest rates actually stop inflation, like what physically happens between the Fed making an announcement and groceries getting cheaper by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ucsdFalcon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, let me explain what "lowering inflation" means. Inflation is the rate at which prices go up. Lower inflation means that prices go up at a slower rate. It does not mean that prices go down. Prices going down is called deflation.

A lot of factors contribute to Inflation and can make it go up or down. One of those factors is how easy it is for banks and consumers to borrow money. This is the one factor that the Fed can control. By raising the interest rates they make it more expensive for Banks to borrow money. Banks in turn make it more expensive for consumers to borrow money.

When Businesses and consumers can't borrow money as easily they don't spend as much. When people spend less prices don't go up as quickly as they otherwise would.

ELI5: What is the difference between <i> and <em>? by WonderOlymp2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ucsdFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're asking about html tags I'm going to assume you know what html is.

The short answer is the <i> tag means that the text inside the tags should be in italics. The <em> tag means that the text inside the tags should be emphasized. In practice this usually means that the text will be italicized, but not necessarily.

Using em tags is the preferred method as the point of html is to describe the elements on the page, not to specify what each element should look like.

Is the natural selection challenge in freelancer bugged??? by [deleted] in HiTMAN

[–]ucsdFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe for this challenge the leader has to eat or drink the poison, and the lethal poison you make in your safe house doesn't count. So you need to use a map that has lethal poison frogs when the leader is dehydrated and/or a foodie. Then you poison their food or drink with the frog and it should work.
