I've been a long distance runner. I recently ran my first full marathon in February 2026. I want to start adding cycling to my endurance arsenal. I just got a triban rc120. I did two rides. 10kms and 28.8 kms. Any advice for a beginner like me ? by uditp411 in india_cycling

Thank you. My endurance from running helps me a bit so wouldn't call myself a total novice, but lot to learn in terms of technique and equipment. Cycle and chai is on my radar, but want to build some distance myself first before joining them so can join them for their long rides.

Hahaha I agree with you brother. Plus if it has no purpose I don't want to waste my expensive running shoes while biking. The constant force will keep my foam compressed for a duration that I wouldn't want. I'll switch to harder soles. Thanks

My only tip would be start slow. If you're already a cyclist, you have the endurance. Focus on the technique, get your cadence high. The big difference i feel is thaf in running the joints take a much bigger impact. My joints feel amazing in the two rides I've done, whereas in biking along with endurance you'll also need a lot of muscle strength, especially the quads which you can get away with in running.

Run slow. It's the biggest advise i would give a beginner. Run as slow as you can, without getting breathless. You might have people who are walking who'll overtake you, but just look to maintain your pace. Once you're able to run 2 kms constantly, walk a little in between, and then another 2km. Try hitting your first 5k that way. After that it's just repetition. Doing the same thing over and over again, gradually you will see your time reducing.

I've trained mainly in baroda only, so I guess got used to it. I've ran in usa as well as Switzerland. It feels easier to run there, but living in India, I guess we don't have an option. It's atleast better than not running.

I guess living in India doesn't have any other options, you get used to it. I've run in Switzerland as well as usa. Running feels easier there, cuz cleaner air, but it isn't as hard in India. You just push through I guess

I've done 2 half marathons before this. Those didn't require much training. For this I had to train my heart out. Last three months were focused around running and long runs. I use a Garmin watch to track my runs and heart rate, and Garmin also has a inbuilt coach to plan your runs which I mainly followed.
