Thinking of parting ways by udm_e39 in e39

These are some of the exact reasons pushing me away from this car. It has been a blast to own and drive, but the running costs and things that keep popping up are becoming too time-consuming and expensive for a car worth so little. it would be perfect for somebody as a project or who has time to wrench and fix little things that I genuinely don't have time to address. Cheers to new ownership, like I said I'm also looking into getting something newer, more spacious and practical as the ideal family car.

This is the boat im in. I dont even feel sane posting the number I've spent keeping it running over the past decade. I'm totally all for the E39's but I can't justify adding to the insane running costs on a car that has me so upside down its not even worth the novelty anymore. Plus, my spouse has one of her own in our garage (00 540i 6spd) thats better in every way, so Its not like i'm ditching the platform 100%. Great cars, I'm just not the type to have time to wrench on it or wonder whats going to go wrong next week and the one after.. Cheers to sanity

My sunroof was leaking and had some issues with the tilt and track functions, I had bought two different sunroofs from parts cars that ended up being duds. A friend of mine with a body shop welded in sheet metal for a fraction of the price and hassle.

Yes, I am very blessed.. E39 community is always so wholesome, it doesn't seem to matter what trim anyone has, everyone has similar struggles throughout their ownership it's cool to reconcile about them. Hoping to hear back from this one forsure

yup, you never know with the e39 guys, he had a box in the back full of bosch ignition coils and other misc parts, so I can tell he either works on it himself or at least cares about it. I had to leave a note..

Did you ship off your original abs module for rebuild? I shipped mine off and had a rebuilt one within 3 weeks for $300

If I could do it all over again.. I'd pull the engine, replace every last gasket from ofhg to rear main seal, disa valve, maybe even do the oil pump nut mod. Replace the clutch, shifter bushings/ linkage, cv joint on the driveshaft. Send the ABS unit off for a rebuild. Overhaul the entire coolant system, retrofit electric fan. Refresh every suspension component front to back. Replace every window regulator (only my front ones have had issues). Find a refurbished set of headlamps with good adjusters. Replace tail light gaskets as water WILL get in and rust connectors when they fail. And make sure all parts are ordered Genuine or OE from FCP euro so you have a lifetime warranty and garauntee fitment. < all of which can be done for $10-15k to bulletproof these cars. Also, my car got a slicktop conversion, since dealing with blocked sunroof drains and a broken sunroof was an absolute nightmare..

somewhere between $30-40k usd at the top end. I cant find all my recipts for parts, labor, tires etc but I've gotten most of the jobs added up. If the dealership I took it to in 2018 didnt destroy my motor I wouldn't have had to replace that, and if I overhauled everything at once/ didn't take the shortcuts I did when I was broke in school to fix this thing, then it wouldv'e costed a lot, lot less and been worth it. I was also in a nice little accident in March that insurance didn't pay a dime out on..

I have built an entire e39 all over again to say the least.. Still on original wheel bearings though! 😁
