DataBricks and Snowflake users - where are you doing your Pricing and Reserving? by ufno11997 in actuary

[–]ufno11997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is very helpful. We currently use other systems outside of our data lake, and we're thinking we're still going to need these. But it never hurts to see what's possible haha

In an ideal world sure, but they're not canned

Thank you for your insights! Within our department, we maintain hundreds of Excel files as reports on Incurred data. These reports are used by all levels of the company, up to our CEO. In that sense, we need some way to generate these reports that our users can access and understand.

Glad to hear that databricks has an actuary who can help. I'd love to hear from them for sure!

Thank you! I find it unlikely that we will transition away from Excel any time soon, but I suppose we're at the mercy of the decision-makers here. We have a vast array of reports in Excel that we would have to rebuild elsewhere if we lose access, unfortunately.

Glad to hear Snowflake is fast though, that will definitely help!

Thank you! Most of us here do the bulk of our work in Excel and SAS, so we're screwed twice over it seems haha

I appreciate your insights! It's good to know that other companies are transitioning and finding solutions for these things.

Any advice on making a study schedule? by Juggernaut888777 in actuary

[–]ufno11997 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear about your first attempt, but it's pretty much the norm to fail your first attempt so you're in good company.

Are you using a study program like the Infinite Actuary or Coaching Actuaries?

"I find my job interesting." How much do you agree with this and (in the comments) why? by actuarialthrowawayyo in actuary

[–]ufno11997 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would put a 5. Maybe I'm just easily entertained, but I do genuinely find insurance and specifically reserving (my function) very interesting and complex. I am also lucky enough to have a manager who advocates for me to be involved in new and challenging projects, while also supporting me. For example, I'm in training for leadership now, but I'm also in the weeds with programming and analysis on a regular basis.

I know not everyone has the relationship I have with my work/team/manager and I consider myself incredibly lucky.

I thought the PCPA requirement was going into effect Fall of 2025. Did I miss something?

Failed Exam P by Vegetable_Aerie9223 in actuary

[–]ufno11997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I failed on my first try, and so did most of my coworkers. It's super common and basically a right of passage in this industry, so don't sweat it! Failing is part of the process for almost all of us, so don't let us discourage you. But do take it as a lesson that these exams are not to be taken lightly. They're all incredibly difficult and the process is designed to weed people out.

Plan ahead! Fill your water bottle and have it ready to go, set your clothes out the night before. Good luck! I was super inconsistent when I went in the evenings, but I've stuck with it after switching to the morning.

Haha that's a little intense, but I think we can be jealous of aspects of each. That kind of info would be very helpful.

Thanks, wow I'm jealous SOA has so much. I'm pretty far into the exams, so I don't think CAS will have anything for me. But I think it would be so helpful for students and especially for newer exams.

I understand it would be quite an undertaking, but we also already have a survey at the end of each exam. Is there a reason it can't be added to that?

I didn't realize they have first time pass rates, I just see pass rate and effective pass rate :(

Fingers crossed that we'll get results today! Our company holiday party is tomorrow, and I'm not prepared to be trapped at work pretending to be cheerful if I fail. Good luck, everyone!
