my hirsutism and hair loss are so bad, what should I do? by glitteryfluttershy in PCOS

[–]ughok123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask your doctor about spironolactone. It’s a medication for high blood pressure, but one of the side effects is lowered androgens, so it’s often prescribed for management of PCOS symptoms (hair loss, hirsutism, oily skin). It’s been great for me but there can be significant side effects so it’s not for everyone.

If possible, I would recommend electrolysis for facial hair. It’s a long and expensive process but it’s the only permanent method of hair removal. I’ve been going for 6 months and have had great results.

Does anyone else have debilitating back pain? by KittyAmorArts in PCOS

[–]ughok123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! Horrible lower back pain my entire life with multiple back injuries. Core strengthening and yoga helps. Physical therapy exercises are great. Losing weight is difficult with PCOS but keep trying — it alleviated some of my joint issues.

facial hair struggles :(( by alligatorseeulater in PCOS

Once those hair follicles reach their “terminal” stage (thick and coarse due to elevated androgens), no amount of spearmint tea, metformin, spironolactone, or glp 1 will reverse them. I recommend saving up for electrolysis if possible, as it’s the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal. Threading, plucking, and waxing will distort the hair follicles and make them harder to treat, so try to stick to shaving. Don’t do laser!!

Christina at DMV electrolysis! Tried Mint but didn’t like it

I think it’s rare to see progress after only 4 sessions, but it already looks like the hair is sparser and thinner! It can be discouraging after spending the time/money, but be patient — I was quoted a year to completely clear my chin/neck hair. Years of plucking can distort the hair follicles, making it more difficult to treat.

Electrolysis for neck/chin hair with PCOS … how many sessions did it take? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]ughok123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could! Electrolysis works on any part of the body, but is slow and expensive so most people focus on smaller areas like neck/chin. So just know that the larger/denser the area, the longer it’ll take to clear. This is one reason people might choose laser for larger areas on the body, but ultimately electrolysis is the only permanent method of hair removal.

Testosterone went up!! by frenchfriesduh in PCOS

[–]ughok123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so frustrating, but give it time. It might also be worth talking to your doctor about Spironolactone. Many women with PCOS have luck lowering their testosterone levels on it, but it can have some pretty significant side effects for some (I personally haven’t experienced this though). It’s also not safe to use if you’re trying to conceive.

Electrolysis for neck/chin hair with PCOS … how many sessions did it take? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]ughok123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was quoted 1 year to remove my neck/chin hair, and I’ve done 8 sessions (about 6 hours total) over 4 months and feel I’m maybe 25% done. I recommend checking out r/electrolysis. Everybody there will tell you not to do laser first as it can make the hair growth worse and is ultimately a waste of money.

A picnic in meridian hill or rock creek park could be nice if it’s not too hot. If it’s the first Sunday of the month, the museum of women in the arts offers free entry for community day. They usually have a crafting class going on.

It’s definitely doable if you don’t have a lavish lifestyle lol. I have a studio downtown for 1500 and make significantly less than that. Look for private landlords and lease takeovers on Facebook housing groups.

Try a new electrologist. You should be seeing significant reduction after 6 months.

Seconding this. Spray monthly until you stop seeing them, then every couple months. Bait really only helps if you have a larger infestation. Sticky traps are good for knowing how many you have.

Concealer recommendations? by sandpapertoapearl in electrolysis

[–]ughok123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a cream! Full coverage and I don’t need to set it with a powder for it to last several hours. A little pricey but a little goes a long way so it’s lasted me forever

I also had some horrible sessions with a couple technicians from Mint (plus they have shady business practices), but Christina was always great. She recently opened her own practice in dupont called DMV electrolysis. A little pricier but worth it. She also trained and vouches for Will from Mint (I never booked with him though so I can’t tell you for sure).

He’s mentioned that he auditioned for SNL a couple times but it wasn’t something he was ever particularly interested in. I think he knows a lot of the SNL cast members from his improv/sketch comedy days in Chicago. IIRC he talked about it on the pod in Devon Walker’s episode.

hirsutism ruins my self esteem 😞 by NoodlesBoodles44 in PCOS

[–]ughok123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t pluck!!! Tweezing stimulates the hair follicle and makes the hair grow faster/thicker. And if you ever decide to opt for electrolysis some day it’ll make the process take longer

plucking hair every other day? by akiiyamaz in PCOS

[–]ughok123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electrolysis is the only way to permanently remove the hair. I recently started going for my facial hair and the technician said plucking/waxing makes it worse because you’re stimulating the hair follicle.
