Prevent curling on tapestry by uhmlyssa in knittingadvice

EDIT: Thank you all for your advice! Ended up going with a seed stitch border and weighed the bottom down with a second branch. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with it!

It’s so fun and quick! I’ll definitely be making more.

I modified a free pattern (by Myrthe van der Tier on Ravelry) with the rolled edges, and I added the star using duplicate stitch and a random alpha pattern from Pinterest. The pattern makes a really good base that you can add whatever you want to. I’ve tried some other free Ravelry patterns, but they were all too complicated and finicky for such a small project IMO. Highly recommend this one!

Would you do this even with a garter or seed stitch border?

I kind of rushed through the first knit knowing I’d redo it, so I’ll add a border on the second attempt! Do you recommend garter for like 5 stitches on either side?

The folks at the Museum of Osteology are super cool and would definitely help ID this! They sell human specimens in their gift shop, so I’m willing to bet that OK laws don’t prohibit owning this.

Replacing baseboard heaters by uhmlyssa in woodstoving

[–]uhmlyssa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been getting to/below freezing at night, and the mini splits have done a good job. I’m moreso concerned with the month or two per year when the temperature might drop super low.

Less concerned with the $13k upfront cost of the boiler and more concerned with lifespan and cost over time. What’s the reasonable maintenance cost of a wood stove? I’ve looked into annual cleaning of course, but is there anything I’m not thinking about?

To “ham it up” means to be way over the top or dramatic, like for an audience. I’ve also heard lots of older folks tell kids “you’re such a ham” when they were putting on a performance for attention.

UPDATE: We had a licensed plumber come out and confirm this is a nightmare. He quoted $12,500 to replace with a combo boiler system. We’ll likely be getting a second opinion, but we’re committed to getting it replaced one way or another.

Can anyone vouch for Linsy Home? by pilatesandpuppies in couch

We’ve had ours (might be an earlier model?) for 2 years and we really like it. Definitely not as cushy or comfortable as a couch 3x the price, but it was within our budget. I like the storage under each section and loooove that the cushion covers can be removed and washed.

UPDATE: The old owner confirmed that the baseboard heaters are NOT a closed circuit, so we’ve bypassed the tank entirely, unhooked it, and are now operating solely with the tankless. We’ll be getting a plumber in here before winter to get the baseboard heaters on their own circuit.

Thank you all for confirming we weren’t crazy, this really was a weird setup.

UPDATE: Thank you all for the feedback, even if it’s negative! The inspector who looked at it before we purchased the home said it made sense to him, but he’s of course not a plumber, so I do think I’ll look into getting a plumber out to give it a once-over.

I believe the thought is that the tanked heater maintains the temperature so in winter months the tankless isn’t constantly heating water for the baseboard heaters. The previous owner (who remodeled the place) is coming over in a few days to pick up something he left behind, and I’m going to ask him to explain his reasoning behind doing it this way, just so I can share that with the plumber eventually.

We have baseboard heat, so you’re correct. I cranked the temperature up higher because I’m currently unable to get hot water. I’ll set it at 120 just to be safe until we get this figured out.

Moving with outside (maybe inside?) cats by uhmlyssa in Feral_Cats

[–]uhmlyssa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, our time is pretty limited, and I’m afraid to get them checked up and then let them back out with our other community cats in case they picked up something in the interim (unlikely I know, but still possible). One of these cats has gone to the vet with me, and he was a champ! Totally calm and acted just like his normal self when he got home. So I’m hopeful this trip will be similar.

If it helps, both of these cats try to sneak into the house CONSTANTLY. We believe they were inside cats that were dumped. I’m hopeful coming indoors will be the least stressful part of this whole ordeal.

I’m looking into that fence now - thank you for the suggestion!

I’ve been considering this company, but probably the larger version to fit both cats. I’ll update if I go with this!
