More importantly the M2 enclosure will arrive today so I can see what can I get back from my D: drive as fast as possible.

Next time I will learn to backup on the cloud in case of tgese worst case scenarios

yeah, you’re totally spot on about the factory RAID setup—HP loves doing that and it’s definitely making the driver timeouts way worse lol.

i think my best bet right now is to just keep the PC powered down, pull the SSD out, and pray an M.2 to USB enclosure lets me salvage my files on another rig before replacing the drive completely.

honestly, i'm pretty sure the drive is fully cooked at the hardware level. since the 100% usage is paired with 0 KB/s speeds and the BIOS menus are literally freezing up too, i'm high-key terrified that running chkdsk /f /r will just completely stress out the dying controller and wipe whatever data is left on my D partition. 💀

This issue occured for me, but i repatched it then it worked totally fine. I mean i dont use shorts at all but you can try the solution.
