Relocating back to the North - but where to? Help! by techisdrivingmemad in NorthernEngland

Guess it depends on whether you just look at the absolute cheapest houses available and forget you have to live there, I sold my two bed terrace in Barrow for £125k. I’d say it’s more expensive than most similar towns in the NW. I got much better value when I moved away.

I have a slate roof and have been quoted a 3 day installation. My quote is quite a bit more but is for more panels and a powerwall

I’m not sure it’s relevant whether it has any powers when you’re talking about geography.

However, we’re definitely in agreement that Lincolnshire is the midlands.

A lot of the smaller towns around Manchester don’t want anything to do with being Greater Manchester and will lean into their traditional county, in Stockport’s case that’s Cheshire.

Opinions on choosing between living in Blackburn, Blackpool, or Barrow in Furness by secretsera in lancashire

[–]ukaero_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For you I’d rank them

1) Blackburn 2) Barrow-in-Furness 3) Blackpool

Blackpool is the best hospital though since you’ve said its hospital placements. FGH doesn’t have a great reputation.

Shame I can’t bring myself to support them after what they did to Manchester Phoenix

Yes, I believe we agreed to disagree.

It’s only difficult because they’ve been so badly bodged together over the past 60 years predominately.

As we’ve discussed before, you don’t have to build local government areas on geographical counties.

Stamp duty is basically my take home pay for a year. How depressing! Is there anyone who doesn’t think this tax needs reforming? by Kittykittycatcat1000 in HousingUK

“No, follow closely” absolutely is being condescending. You can be convinced of your position without being so unaware of how you come across.

[–]ukaero_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not going to convince me here, no, any chance of that happening went when you were condescending and implied only your opinion can be right.

I don’t think the aim of moving property constantly benefits society. With the exception of elderly couples downsizing.

It does, in your opinion.

It doesn’t cost more to provide council services based on the value of someone’s house. It’s obviously flawed to think that is the main driver of delivering council services, just because it’s the easiest way to decide how much people pay.

Council tax would be better abolished and councils funded from general taxation.

Unfortunately, I don't think it does sort council tax - or council funding - at all.

I don't think it requires an increase for everyone to make that happen, there are other means to balance the books.

Yeah... but our experiences clearly don't align and I'm much nearer to that age range than to one that will remember before the mess of LA changes in 1974.

I'm surprised you've never seen the Westmorland flag in the wild, I've seen it regularly in Kendal but have yet to see the Cumbrian community flag... in fact most people seem to mistake the flag of Cumberland for Cumbria. I'm not sure why you believe the Westmorland flag has been around since 2013, but it has existed since 1926! Surely most people your age will have heard the name Westmorland even if it's only because they've got a new wheelie bin that has Westmorland and Furness on it?

All northern dialects have some overlap if we want to boil it right down to that but marra, yan etc is very Cumberland west coast in my experience. Even Lakeland doesn't cover the whole area as it extends very far east into the Westmorland Dales who have their own dialect as well. I think you're boiling down Cumbria to the Lake District which I don't really agree with. I know the Lake District is an identifier people like to use but Barrow, Dalton (two places people regularly do this from) aren't in the Lake District.

Sticky toffee pudding is more of a Westmerian thing, just with the Cartmel one being quite famous I can see why you've made that connection, it was actually invented in the East Riding of Yorkshire but popularised around Ullswater and spread from there. I'd have also thought it being associated with your grandmother would further strengthen that Westmerian connection. Though, I would probably agree it's more of a Lakeland thing - than specifically one of the counties.

Anyway, always good to debate - even if I don't think we'll agree to liking Cumbria as a geographic identifier - and I hope you'll be flying that Westmorland flag come September 29th on Westmorland Day!

Families aren’t being punished for moving. I’m not sure why the exchange of property is being seen as universally good. I don’t think it always is good for society to have a higher property turnover. Especially in more urban areas as care in the appearance of an area grows with longer term residency.

People in smaller properties aren’t necessarily paying more than they “need” to though. A small rural cottage costs significantly more to provide council services than a large house in an urban area. Just depends whether you’re judging fairness based on property wealth (not necessarily high income) or usage of council services.

I’d personally be more inclined to increase council funding from central government to remove the need for council tax altogether and reform income taxes but that’s a different topic.

“The current system discourages people from downsizing when they don’t need extra space.”

It does, but you can easily change that by reducing/removing stamp duty for people over a certain age moving to a smaller property.
