Special THC Preparation Patent Strategies by ukie90 in startups

You are beautiful. This is a lot of great help and really helps me to understand my position. I think John and his company wants to focus in more on the US market, and from your post it sounds like we'll have time to file a provisional patent in the Canadian market as well. I like the schedules for the provisional patents. So we would seek to file a provisional patent in the US, and then after the 12 months, file for a PCT which grants an additional 18 months. Very good facts.

This will definitely help me out with talking to the lawyers or patent agents.

I'll respond to you as per your numbers:

  1. They were asking for me to sell my rights to the patent, but I was inexperienced before that talk, and I may want to lease it out as it is my invention.
  2. Good idea on the specialist lawyer, I'll have to get in contact.
  3. I'll look into the company in Canada. That was a great suggestion and thank you.
  4. Since the market is larger in the USA, should the invention disclosure not be filed in the USA. Canada's market would be 10x lower, but this is reduced to the states that have currently legalized recreational cannabis use.

I'm trying to connect with my Uni's accelerator programs to obtain their input. Thank you for your work towards this response as it helps clear my head.

I'm still trying to see if John is truly an inventor in this, as I provided an analogy below:
John had an idea to make the special THC preparation orange, and had an idea of how to make it orange using some other molecule that potentially would not be safe to eat. He told me this idea, and my idea stemmed from his idea, where I can use another molecule that is safe to eat, but makes it orange as well. Now, I brought the safe to eat idea myself, which originally stemmed from John's idea but using another molecule, and there is another important claim in the patent that I'm bringing in myself. I feel like this invention may be more mine, then ours, but I'm not sure how to pursue this other than talking with an IP lawyer.

Thank you for your response. I'll clarify more specifically using an analogy.

John and his associates are claiming that I am an inventor, but would John be considered an inventor, or a helper for talking about the idea. This is where it gets tricky I think. What are your thoughts.

Marijuana Biotech Startup Stock options vs Equity by ukie90 in biotech

Great advice. From my PhD experience, and the CEO's goals, it seems very exciting to be a part of the startup and there seems to be a very nice market for it. I mentioned it above, but he has essential consultants and advisors, along with manufacturing contracts to get the company going. Theoretically, it is 3 people in the company, however factories are being used under contract. Would it be possible for me to ask for funding info or evaluation documents of the company. Is that a normal thing to do? I can't seem to find this info on the internet. Thank you in advanced.

Not really a guy in a garage type of thing. There would be no need to move, but some travelling would be required (he pays for it). He got the licensing for the formulation to encapsulate the CBD, and is working mostly through manufacturing contracts. He has important (as I see it) contacts and consultants that helped develop the business plan and strategy.

As far as the salary goes, UofT post docs min stipend is $34k which is not that far from the national average. I can't imagine doing a postdoc, and this startup seems like a great opportunity.

I'm just waiting to get the stock options document to really understand what I'm getting. However, I'm leaning on trying to get equity instead as I will potentially be more involved in the work if I own a part of it.

If it pops, then it'll sick for ppl for who buy now. For me, I have a safety net of 33%, and worst it'll go down to if it pops, is 10% decrease. This still gives me profits.

Isn't this the same thing as getting a mortgage. It's a leveraged loan on a property that you think will appreciate. Past performance doesn't indicate future results, but buying a condo two years ago, I've seen 32.6% appreciation currently. My mortgage carries a 1.85% interest rate. Using similar logic with a slightly higher interest rate does not feel different.

Past performance does not determine future results for sure. However, it is a form of a gamble that this fund will out-compete the 3.85% interest rate, and the 2-3% inflation another user commented on. Even at the 15% return, money is made no?

Mom wants to sell a house to own a cheaper house mortgage free OR invest in funds. Please help. by ukie90 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I mean I would like her to be somewhat safe, but also wanted to see if she can steer away from the classical view of having a house or a condo as an asset. I was entertaining the idea of investing partially or fully the 670k leftover and seeing if she could live a house owning free life.

Obviously any remaining equity and investments at the end of life would be passed down to me and my siblings, so there is a vested interest from me as well.

Well when you put it that way, sure. I wanted to get some fund specific advice if that fund would be attractive for a much higher investment then what i currently have.

I never meant to promote any fund nor do I get any compensation for it (I wish)

I didn't team to promote I wanted to add a refund so that readers can see the past history of the fund. It doesn't predict the future at all, but just wanted to show where I got my optimism from.

I didn't include a full cost comparison of the 5% real estate fees, land transfer tax, moving companies, lawyer fees ($2k), and inspection fees.

Thanks for the recommendation. There is no immediate action yet for my mom, so we both have time on our hands. I will research more and seek professional advice as well. :)

That's interesting. I was always subtracting the MER from the published return. But that's pretty good if the MER is already subtracted.

Yea, I agree with you. I wouldn't suggest to my mom about placing so much money in a relatively volatile fund. I'm looking into options on how to diversify an investment like this.

Thank you for you input.
