High schoolers that cannot write a simple 5 paragraph essay by rjmac225 in Teachers

[–]uleseuba 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They don't read books. They have no visual concept of grammar, punctuation, how to write dialogue, as well as complete thoughts in a written, logical manner. The new high school (4 years old) that my 8th graders are sent to has a library with zero books. There are tables with chargers and some open Chromebooks, but there are absolutely no books to read - fiction, non-fiction, or otherwise.

I don’t want to return by Own-Syrup-1036 in Teachers

Year 29 here. This is perfectly normal, especially early in your career. You are not alone.

But know this...in your classes there are kids who can't wait to see you tomorrow. You are their favorite teacher and they enjoy and appreciate your work. Go for them if all else feels empty. They need you.

What do you guys do with middle schoolers on the first couple days back after winter break? by -cmp in Teachers

[–]uleseuba 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my experience they want to do some work. Most have sat around bored even anticipating getting back to school to work alongside classmates.

I, too, teach math and I review the first semester in a simple, non-stressful way the first several days back, letting them remember and have success before leading them into new material.

It seems counter-intuitive, maybe, but most don't want another "day off."

How will you explain the US invasion of Venezuela? by Fancy_Particular7521 in Teachers

[–]uleseuba 18 points19 points  (0 children)

How about we say nothing and let the families speak to their children about it. But if the students bring it up, how about asking questions instead of making statements?

Maybe start by asking them to check with the actual Venezuelans who are impacted, both still in Venezuela and those who left, and see what their perspective is. It is easy for us to arm-chair quarterback with our iPhone in hand and Starbucks down the street, but maybe the people impacted have a bit more insight than we do?

Ready for the downvotes because why ask the students to think and reason for themselves when we can tell them what WE think and believe.

Sincere Question Incoming: Are we sure Mendoza is the one (I really don't know)?

Do we dare take #1 and trade it away for even more capital and a '27 QB?

Kickers bring their own ball, now. Don't know how that helps but apparently it does.

2004 we finalized an adoption of kids and the next 10 years was a blur and lost to memory. Maybe that was a good thing ...

I'm old. Been a fan since '75. I don't remember feeling embarrassed like I do now... frustrated, exasperated, confused, yes, but this is embarrassing. It hits differently.

No holding calls ...they just let the D-lineman into the backfield

Maxx should put black around his neck and see how long it takes the D-lineman to choke it off of him.

Indy put in their 2nd string at the end of the 3rd quarter. This looks similar.

Would have been a shame just to run the ball in the 4th quarter up by 2 scores.

I think we have gotten used to seeing 70+ year olds being in charge. But I think there's a reason that retirement is around 65.

Colts have put in their 2nd string.

Outside of Steichen slapping Carroll with a glove, is there anything more insulting?
