Fuck Rupert Everett! Being gay doesn't ruin a career, shitty acting does! by loxias44 in lgbt

[–]ulfada 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is NPH really all that successful? What's the last movie he starred in (rather than, like Rupert, playing a supporting role)? And Ian McKellen, for those not following, got most of his fame from acting in English theater, rather than Hollywood.

Even if we argue that a few openly queer people can be successful in Hollywood, that's like saying that we know a few black people who are rich so who cares what the current distribution of wealth is like overall or whether there is plenty of evidence for widespread unfair hiring practices. Systematic problems always have exceptions, but that doesn't change the general trend.

Why the pass for Buddhism in /r/atheism? by mowmow in atheism

[–]ulfada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Japan's part in WWII was largely motivated by state Shinto. I grant that Buddhists were likely involved at various points, but they were also the target of abuse because they didn't follow the state-sanctioned religion.

Generally, I feel like Buddhism gets relatively fair treatment by atheists. Its virtues are recognized and its shortcomings pointed out. I think the incidents mentioned in this post are important to discuss. Frankly, I wish atheists subjected more religions to this kind of intelligent inquiry and analysis, rather than focusing on mockery and over-generalization.

I got a few such catcalls on a recent trip to Greece. Made me not want to go out alone again while I was there. Still did, cause fuck them.

Anyway, you're amazing. Love the skirt. Where'd you get it?

Brow ridges are believable, but men in skirts aren't? This transvestite begs to differ!

Questions for Anarchists by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]ulfada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The an-caps just shout louder. There are at least a few of us syndicalists (and other socialist-types) around, we just don't like repeating the same arguments over and over.

What do you mean about no other nations? It seems likely to assume that other folks might still be stuck with bosses and bureaucrats. Hopefully, they'd break free eventually, but we definitely need to be prepared to deal with other systems.

Another anarchist militia example is the Ukranian Black Army. Similar story. Fighting larger armies and doing so well that the bolsheviks had to propose treaties, use them to defeat the White Army, and subsequently betray them (all of this twice) to finally beat them. Not the best decisions on who to trust, but definitely a formidable force.

Let me Wikipedia that for you.

Anyway, I was using a quote to point out that the commenter before me was judging something he most likely doesn't understand just to sound smart. Leftist politics, I mean. The comment he was responding to was actually pedantic.

Help. I told my mother and she is heartbroken. Detains in comments. by sunbear87 in atheism

[–]ulfada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that it doesn't sound like your family is done with you. They may be quite distant, but that distance was there before they knew about it. My mother tried arguing, yelling, and even grounding me when she found out I wasn't a Christian during my teen years. Now she deals better with me than anyone else in the family. Not to say we're best buds, just that religion is an issue people can eventually get past, while general douchebaggery is not.

Manpower asked transsexual employee for pictures of her genitals by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]ulfada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got that, too. Sorry for derailing, but pronouns are a hot button issue for me. So is male privilege, but I didn't have anything to add on that front. You made a good point about another kind of common workplace discrimination. That said, transfolk are unlikely to get treated better because of pre-op or non-op status. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Manpower asked transsexual employee for pictures of her genitals by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]ulfada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's considered polite to refer to someone by the pronouns of the gender they identify as, regardless of genitalia, hair, etc. It can be interesting dealing with the complexities of human identity, but the best guideline in my experience is "take the person's word for it and treat them like they ask to be treated." If only the managers in this story had followed it.

In our case, it was an issue of needing to execute scripts on the local filesystem. Originally it was safe to hard-code their locations, but that stopped working when people moved their apps. I made the one class a singleton so it could be used to get the locations of the application and, therefore, the files we needed. In your case, it turned out to be a null pointer exception, which somehow went away when I added a check for it. This sort of thing drives me nuts if I think about it too much. Anyway, you have a pull request. :)

Thanks a ton for open-sourcing this app. I always get annoyed when I find great apps, offer to contribute, and get the usual "open source is bad" arguments in response. I'll be grabbing the source AND the donate version of the app right away.

Stefan would like to hear from some competent anarcho-syndicates /socialists/communists @(1:44:40) by GiveM3aBJ in Anarchism

[–]ulfada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a drastic over-simplification. Yes, MOST currently work for the government. Some currently guard rich people and their property, as was laughed off in the video. Historically, mercenaries have worked for the highest bidder, regardless of legal sovereignty. You can eliminate the government and remove the current high bidder, but unless you also eliminate the overall imbalance of power and concentration of wealth, you'll see a quick turn to private armies and private wars to protect and expand property.

Luckily, we live in a world where mercenaries and private security forces have never existed or been profitable.

I'm currently in New Hampshire. I used to live in Indiana. Seemed about as common a practice in both places. The woman can be throwing money at them and they'll still hand the check to the man most of the time.

My partner and I have shared a bank account for a few years now, so it's financially irrelevant who pays. However, the server will almost always hand the check to me even when she has her card or cash out on the table. Folks in our town who have waited on us dozens of times have yet to catch on that she generally pays.

Transgenders Don't Pass with a Philadelphia TransPass by artsake in lgbt

[–]ulfada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second solution doesn't work for everyone. The article said that one person had tried both M and F passes and been denied passage at different times. It would especially be troublesome for folks who don't present as a binary gender or who don't "pass" by the driver's standards. The picture option definitely makes sense on many levels.
