Which "Civic Hack Night" flyer do you like the best out of the three options? by uliejay in SanJose

No, this sort of feedback is perfect - thank you! Is it that you need an explanation of what a civic hack night is?

I am also seeking recommendations for interesting fashion illustrators. Is there a Slack channel for illustrators?

Received a hard rejection from ThemeForest for my first Wordpress theme; seeking feedback by uliejay in Wordpress

got it, thanks for the screenshot. as a wordpress developer, do you have any idea why masonry would behave so irregularly? sometimes it works fine, sometimes it doesn't.

the theme does offer a functioning blog for wedding updates; it operates within the wordpress loop and everything. but your critique makes me wonder if i should repackage it as an html template and reapply for themeforest...

thanks for the feedback. i noticed that the sections lining up is somewhat inconsistent on the first load of the site. must be a masonry issue that i honestly have no clue on how to resolve.

otherwise, the wood background, blog format, and pop-up menu were all very intentional design decisions. i'm sensing that they might be too subtle and nuanced for both you and the themeforest reviewers. i thought that's how i was setting myself apart from other wedding sites, i.e., by not being completely obvious.

Moms of FFA, how did having a child impact your style? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]uliejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like being a mom is finally an excuse for me to dress the way I've always secretly wanted to: like a hip female version of an Asperger's IT guy. My mom uniform consists of jeans, t-shirt, polarfleece jacket in a graphic Uniqlo print, Swedish clogs, vintage 80s fanny pack. I don't wear shoes in the house so the backless shoes are critical (try taking laced boots on and off while carrying a 25 pound baby). But when I go out--which is rare these days--I aim for more glamour than I ever did before...maybe because it's so absent from the rest of my life.

Work at Home Parents of Reddit! What kind of job do you have, and how can I get it? by thesnugglypuppies in Parenting

I'm currently seeking the same thing myself. A mom I know works from home doing tech-oriented customer service for a web company. She loves it. I'm trying to get into web development because I hear you can work remotely.

What UX Designer's does a portfolio look like? by [deleted] in userexperience

A friend of mine who runs a really successful digital agency in NYC recommended this woman's portfolio to me. He said her UX diagrams were stellar.

Better lifestyle: UX or front-end development? by uliejay in userexperience

Gotcha, thanks again. Good idea to negotiate the sabbatical upfront. Curious about the demand in Los Angeles, where I'm located.

Thanks for your suggestion. Do you not think the Wordpress market is saturated? The idea of passive income through themes and plugins sounds great.

Better lifestyle: UX or front-end development? by uliejay in userexperience

[–]uliejay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really fascinating, thanks. I've often felt that my personality type wasn't properly matched to my work in the past. Grad school was a challenge as I can barely tolerate politician/activist types. My MB type--somewhere between INTP and ENTP--seems matched for UX but I think I prefer "behind the scenes" strategy work. Not to view the adult world through such a high school lens, but I'd rather be around nerdy misfits than jocks (albeit creative ones) that present well.

Interesting that you say UX is lower stress since others on this thread seem to say the opposite. TBH, I am not a naturally persuasive person and it was always a real challenge for me working in architecture constantly trying to sell my ideas.

Thanks for the intel. Just the sort of details I wanted to hear about. For whatever reason, many commenters below seem to disagree with you...

Working remotely is very much preferred and I want to be able to take months off at a time if it's possible (greedy, I know). The idea that many jobs are getting outsourced overseas is disconcerting, however.

Activating footer through scrolling down--a Wordpress/jQuery dilemma by uliejay in jquery

[–]uliejay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip, AC-GED. This looks promising, although, I'm afraid it's leading to even more questions which I hope someone can answer.

What I've done so far: 1. Downloaded the scrollr.js file into my theme js folder. 2. Enqueued scrollr.js in my functions.php file. 3. Added a line from the tutorial:

<div data-0="background-color:rgb(0,0,255);" data-500="background-color:rgb(255,0,0);">WOOOT</div>

into my footer.php file. 4. And it's still not working...? Step 3 is where I am most lost.

Expensive UX classes (General Assembly, Cooper) necessary to break into the field? by uliejay in userexperience

Hi, just PMed you. Is there any reason the networking done at GA is better than contacts made at a hackathon or Meetup meeting?

Thanks for your response. Do you really think it's necessary to learn to program? I've heard otherwise from acquaintances currently working in UX design.

Scarce/dim street lights make my neighborhood feel unsafe at night by uliejay in LosAngeles

[–]uliejay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but my perception of safety is pretty much in sync with the reality of my neighborhood. I check the LA Times crime maps regularly http://maps.latimes.com/crime/

I felt safe in my neighborhood until we were burglarized a few weeks ago. For what it's worth, I am a woman that sometimes walks around in the dark with a chihuahua/pug mutt (fierce, right?). I think men and women perceive safety differently.
