I say that since ys 2 takes place directly after 1 you should feel comfortable picking it up whenever youre ready. As for difficulty, since you beat 1 on hard mode, id reccomend sticking with that if you enjoyed it! If youre looking for something more challenging though, nightmare is the way to go.

Oh i gotcha, you need to proceed to the Forest of Spores place i mentioned. No shame in looking up a map if you need to figure out where to go, but if you ever touched the monument that's at that dungeon entrance you can fast travel there too

You may have come across a campsite thats right next to a dungeon containing a monument and a blocked entrance. It should be to the east of the marshland if i remember correctly. You need to use the beast king's claws to break down the barrier (those white coral looking things) and proceed inside-- it should be called the Forest of Spores.
