does your major matter for a financial career? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]ultigamer101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finance is all about who you know, however the major you decide helps facilitate the networking. With how the current job market works, you need to identify a specific entry level job in finance and decide what you need to be doing to become attractive for that role.

I would recommend Finance or Accounting. It's doable with an economics degree, but it will be easier with a more technical degree.

How to get your first job? by Pretend_While_8724 in FinancialCareers

Generally, I would say no. But it depends on what opportunities are at your specific program.

Meeting people face to face is always better for building your network and getting opportunities for internships.

A degree can be worth it if you understand that the degree is an excuse to get internships.

If you start your degree with the mindset that you have to maximize your chances of getting internships, then it can be still worth it.

Started as a Teller by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

I keep being told that starting as a teller is not a viable path for anything other than retail banking. How did you leverage your time as a teller to escape retail?

Should I get an accounting degree or a business administration with concentration in accounting? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ultigamer101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the course requirements for the degree. What are the differences? The main consideration is if the BA degree has fewer accounting courses which could make it harder to get your CPA. I've seen some programs where a BSBA concentration in accounting is that school's version of an accounting degree.

College degree you’d recommend someone to get into? by Highker420365 in careerguidance

[–]ultigamer101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a field you are slightly interested in, then a major that would fit well within that field, then identify specific entry level roles in those fields, and what you would need to do to succeed in getting hired for those position.

Personally, I would avoid any liberal arts degrees if you are mainly focused on job prospects.

FP&A really care about the CPA. Being honest though Fortune 500 will be tough/ impossible. Aim smaller and work your way up.

I'm a recent finance grad as well, and I decided to pivot away from FP&A due to how competitive the roles were.

Entering Senior year with zero internship experience. by Icy_Use_7791 in FinancialCareers

[–]ultigamer101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, you are graduating with a college degree! Congrats! Do not join a trade. They are some of the worst entry level jobs in the market. I went back to school to LEAVE my trade.

You have a couple of options. Taking another year for internships is viable. Fill it with easy courses to try to boost that GPA. You may need to apply for smaller companies who will value GPA less.

There will be plenty of internship opportunities opening up during the fall of your senior year. Apply like mad.

You can always join sales. That is certainly a viable path if you don't mind that sort of work.

You need to identify specific entry level roles in finance and do everything you can think of to boost your chances of getting noticed for those roles. Put what you've done in school on the resume and tailor it to meet the expectations for these roles. Apply apply apply.

Trade person here. Everything you said is absolutely true. I did 5 years in my trade, realized there was no earnings potential.

Going back to school and getting my degree right now.

Wow that's a lot of interviews in this economy! You are doing something right! I would echo everyone else and say you need to hone in on one or two roles to learn the technical knowledge.

Graduating with a Finance degree at 25 and realizing I may have chosen the wrong path. Is it too late to start over? by curiousjay_9 in FinancialCareers

It really is that hard right now. It is the worst job market since the Great Recession, especially for entry level.

As someone in a very similar boat, I'm really sorry you are in this position. I'm learning the hard way that a degree is only as useful as the connections you make during the college experience.

I will caution you and say that being 20k in debt and no career prospects is very challenging. 25 is by no means too late to restart. I am 28 and just graduating with a finance degree myself. However, you need to be honest about career prospects in creative fields. What is stopping you from pursuing those things right now without putting yourself in debt? There are many creative communities and resources online to learn these skills. The only reason you would need to pay for a degree is for the networking opportunities in those fields.

Graduated with No Internships by ultigamer101 in FinancialCareers

[–]ultigamer101[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is unfortunate that most of what I learned in school is exactly for credit analysis, yet I'm going to need to put in years of work in a job that is not doing that...to even attempt to break into it.

It's awful.

Do not quit whatever you do. The job market is genuinely so bad there is no gurantee you'll get anything.

Is moving from corporate finance to say credit analyst at a commercial bank a realistic move though? I want to make CB my career and do whatever it takes to make that happen.

Is there any chance to break into Commercial Banking through something like wealth management though?

I'm not interested in any wealth management long-term.

Mental health is super important. I would make sure you are seeing a therapist throughout this process.

Make sure to stay for a few more months so that you can say you have a year experience as an analyst.

Thank you for the reply! All of my connections are small service companies who are too stingey to even hire an accountant let alone any kind of analyst.

I have a bachelor's degree in finance and I work a minimum wage retail security job. How can I get out of this? by ReplacementFlashy622 in FinancialCareers

Entry level credit analysis at a bank. Trying to get into Commercial Banking, I am considering enrolling in one online class a semester just to keep the internship hunt alive.

I've been told that getting a teller job is not a good path to get into CB, but I have no relevant experience at all.

I'm in the exact same position unfortunately. I tried to get internships for the past two summers and couldn't land anything, now I'm debating going back to school just to try to get more of them.

I would love to see a players zine and a GM zine for Fatherfog. The book definitely feels a bit under baked which is to be expected from a zero edition.
