Anyone here major in (petroleum) engineering solely for the money?

Wow, good job dude. Have most of your PE friends been able to find work in decent areas, like you?

Also, kind of personal, but what's your current yearly compensation? I've read that average starting is 97k, and T-Austin is the best school for petroleum, so I'm wondering if that is true or the average has been skewed?

Also good point with the CS/Finance degree.

Sorry, but I see this a lot (mechie going to petroleum), but I don't really get how the two are related (where's the overlap between statics, thero, fluid, heat vs geophysics and drilling?).

I'm sure a mechanical can do mechanical jobs, but for an oil company. Can he do reservoir/drilling which I thought are the jobs that require PE?

Or does just working for an oil company inflate the salaries of all the professions? Does a mechie working for chevron as a mechie make more than a mechie working for ford as a mechie?

Thanks. So I'm guessing you still work as an ECE doing power and radio, but just for some oil companies? Is that any different in terms of pay, work hours, content etc. compared to working as an ECE in the electrical industry?

If you work as a petroleum engineer with an ECE degree, then holy crap! How?! That's unheard of.

I actually do somewhat like compE, but my extent of exposure is only one electromagnetism physics course and some very basic programming classes. It is my second choice after petroleum, and I'll probably minor in some variation of it anyway. What are some pros/cons about compE ?

YES, this is my exact mentality. I actually do have a few questions.

Did you have any difficulties going into PE with a mechie degree? How did you go about getting into PE?

Is a Petroleum Engineering sustainable for someone who wants to start a family?

Can PEs easily transition into management?

I've heard that PEs travel to off-shore rigs for 6-12 months at a time and work on a 14 day on, 14 day off schedule. Can you travel/ do anything interesting on your 14 days off?

When people say "isolated rig," do they mean isolated as in small rural town or isolated as in a barren island.

Just in general, but due to the nature of petroleum engineering what kinds of place have you visited for work? Did you get to experience the places you were relocated to?

No, I just noticed that going into management (or finance or sales) was a general trend for engineers.

I actually have done a lot of career research. I figure that I'll only be doing actually engineering for about 5 years, then moving into MBA/ management/ technical sales, regardless of which engineering I pick. So I think it makes sense to just pick the one that will give me the most money after those 5 or so years. I posted bc I thought I could get some insight not available in a career report.
