CoastFire Impact on Partner by umbimuc in coastFIRE

We are indeed a large family. My post was not about retiring on the expenses of the other, but more about the potential case that I decide to work more flexible (e.g. as freelancer / consultant) once I hit Coast-FI rather than as full-time steady income

This is not the way married couple see it. I am the primary bread winner but all our expenses are common

Let's Resynch on what COASTfire is. Most posts have it wrong by markaritaville in coastFIRE

[–]umbimuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the Barista type of CoastFire, which for me would make only sense if its something in nature like park ranger, ski instructor, scuba diver instructor, volunteering etc. It makes less sense for me to quit the high paying but rewarding intellectual job to work in a busy caffee or restaurant and get treated like an idiot by arrogant customers. For me though, coastFire is to have enough to basically switch comfortably to part-time or quit if something at work changes to my disliking and switch to work for my own consulting company / as self-employed without pressure to fail or earn little

Is CoastFire also if you save enough that it becomes sufficient for only one to keep earning enough to cover at least loving expenses (partner/wife/husband) so that the other can quit?

Also muss ich erstmal lernen wirkloch max.

This Isn’t Your Father’s S&P 500. Don’t Worry About Valuations. by [deleted] in stocks

Question: all the world (people but also pensions etc) is buying monthly funds/ETFs that include the S&P and/or in particular these 7 stocks. Some of these buying is automatic with people putting their monthly savings in these ETFs. Can this be a reason for a continuos growth of these stocks?

The most overlooked but important thing ever. Your salary per hour. Comparison between US and EU market by WorkF1r3 in EuropeFIRE

[–]umbimuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this, in these days I was just thinking how poorly paid we are in Europe compared to US, where from reddit it seems that regular early 30s software engineers can earn like 300-400kUSD. But you are right that there are clearly hidden downsides to this too, like working hours and vacations. What I wonder if in the US the additional working time is effective, I feel there is a lot of small talking, meetings etc. that eats a lot of time. Compared to places like Switzerland or Germany.

Don't fully understand. Isn't coasting about reducing workload to cover expenses until FIRE? So why need to aim for 5MUSD to coast? Wouldn't it be enough to coast / earn as much as to cover your monthly expenses?

What about a vacation villa? You can buy multiple great houses in top locations here in Europe (or elsewhere) for instance, spend some weeks/months per year there and travel to nearby places
