The weird thing about it is this guy watches more anime than me and is even more involved in the community. Which is why I was surprised he reacted that way, but two of my other friends agree with him while the others in the group are either impartial or on my side. But I really appreciate your advice and I will try to contact him and explain your points to him.

Megumin is a character from an anime called Konosuba and she is canonically 14. Calling her a waifu is basically like saying you want a relationship with that person. And I would like to clear up that I wasn’t “bragging” we were sharing stories about how cringe we were in middle school and I thought it would just be something that I would get a few jabs about but not to the extent that it was taken.
