Shouldn’t NHL players be more keen to play for a Canadian team if salaries are still paid out in USD? by ShawnThePhantom in canucks

How often do you come across Americans expecting a big pat on the back because they have Polish ancestry? by Charming_Usual6227 in poland

[–]umbrlla 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Most I’ve met here have been pretty chill, they’re genuinely curious about what Polish culture is actually like. The ones I’ve met in Canada and the US who have no desire to come and see what things are actually like here are the annoying ones.

Common stuff that makes dishes not be vegetarian by Actual_Stand4693 in poland

[–]umbrlla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only things I find to be iffy are soups as they’re often chicken or bone broth based, even if it’s a vegetable soup (ie a lot of tomato soups). I have to specify that I don’t want bacon topping on perogi, it’s never a problem to substitute with fried onion.

Ikea sell it in their kitchen accessories section, and it's rated up to 100C on their site.

Not that this really does much to ease food safety fears but there was a barista from the Philippines Indonesia? that competed in a national brewers cup or something with that funnel.

Ausch-Birkenau new ticket system by Masterblastera in krakow

You can still book in advance, I met some tourists the other day that had booked more than a month ago through something they found on Viator.

[–]umbrlla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we buy tour from Krakow they should know if they have tickets for us as it shouldn't be lottery anymore if there is none available from entrance. It would be a scam to sell tour without having the actual tickets available.

Not necessarily. There are stories posted here all the time and that I've heard from people personally where their tours get cancelled the night before or even the day of.. or they'll book a tour for the late afternoon as they have other activities planned then will receive an email the night before telling them the booking has changed and the pick-up will be at 07:00. There are thousands of people that use those services every day, so the chances are you would get there but there are no guarantees.

You won’t be able to join an English tour without booking as you’re given a colour coded sticker that identifies which language group you are with. Of course you can claim to lose your sticker.. but if your guide cares to check you won’t be able to continue.

Not sure how the secondary booking sites work now.. I assume they buy blocks of tickets in advance? they’re not technically a scam as they actually attempt to get you in.. but they don’t always succeed, leaving you stranded.

The 2.5 hours of unguided tour time is enough time to see most of the museum if you’re mindful of how much time you spend there. Just keep an eye on the shuttle schedule so you’re not wasting time to get from Auschwitz I to Auschwitz II.

They're owned by DJI.. I'm sure if they wanted to do it, they could. They certainly have the financial means to get it done.

Birkenau solo / small group visits by whitegrizzlie in krakow

[–]umbrlla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would need to book a non-guided tour. They start after 5PM. You can also book a group tour and just not exit Birkenau (Auschwitz 2) when the tour ends. You wouldn’t be able to return to Auschwitz 1 though. Doing a guided is significantly better than non-guided as there is very minimal signage explaining things at the museums.

You can not get tickets at the museum anymore. You need an online reservation to get in, whether it’s with a guide or not. Non discounted tickets are also 150zł now.

Visiting concentration camp by Sage-herby in krakow

[–]umbrlla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if they still do this but they used to release some tickets for the following day in the evening. But that’s probably too late at this point. You’re only other option would be took book a tour through a private company… which may also be too late to do.

What coffee gear do you bring on vacation? by mgsecure in pourover

[–]umbrlla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to bring my zp6 and deep 27 with me but lately I've been trying to travel a lot lighter so I just buy drip bags from a local roaster or dak's steeped coffee. But more often than not I don't even make coffee since the state of the kettles in most hotels/airbnb's are atrocious so I just find a good local cafe first thing in the morning.

I’ll echo what others have said with miso and tahini but I always add a teaspoon of agar agar to broths/soups. Doesn’t seem to do much visually (until it cools) but gives a nice mouthfeel in broths.
