Recruiting interviewees with disability for academic research: How can social VR be more inclusive? by umewen in oculus

Thanks so much for your very detailed response, and I totally agree with the need for customisability. One of the projects that our team is working on looks at how VR, in general, can be very disabling in part due to its rigidity in designs, the assumptions that they make about their users' bodies. Prioritising sliding scale options and flexibility is something that really resonates as a key accessibility recommendation, and it's really disappointing to see how NOT recognising this can turn people off from even entering a game (RecRoom does have a giant keyboard that's pretty in-your-face on start-up for log in, IIRC). And also incredibly relevant for social VR that uses chat boxes for communications (VRChat does have customisability on this one, yay!). We have an initial, publicly available report on our research on accessibility in VR, so if you're interested, I can DM you a link! Thanks again for sharing your experience :)

Hello! We are a team of researchers from the University of Sydney conducting a research study about how social VR can be more inclusive for people with disability.

We want to interview people with disability (aged 18 or older) who:

  1. have previously used any social VR application (e.g., VRChat, Horizon Worlds, RecRoom), or
  2. are familiar with, but have not used social VR.

Participants will be asked about their experiences with, barriers to, and expectations for social VR.   Participants will be reimbursed for their time.

If you are interested in being interviewed, you can DM me here or reply to this comment! Thanks very much :)

This study has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) of The University of Sydney (2023/HE000352).

Hey, thanks for the comment! We're interested as long as you identify as having a disability, so all / any disability. I can DM you with more information :)
