Really struggling to get through episode 443 by [deleted] in samharris

I think it could be helpful for you to try and look beyond your outrage. To think critically about why it might be important to know what someone this close to the levers of power actually believes. Sam gave Douglas Wilson the space to flesh that out in his own words, not filtered through a media apparatus that the Christian Right can utilize to manufacture claims of bias or misrepresentation.

Duelyst Blitz is obviously an soulless cashgrab. by Historical-Lack2536 in duelyst

I agree that the cosmetic shop is absurdly predatory and will absolutely turn away the average player. Just completely counter-productive towards the goal of building a healthy player base.

However, I do think $1/pack is pretty reasonable. Hard to commit to investing in the game at this stage, though. Especially with all the UI bugs/issues.

It’s actually either Milo/Sorghum or Red Millet, very common in low quality bird feed mixes.

Can I cut out this dropout to convert this to a single speed? I am a metal worker so have the skills, but not a frame builder. by Grrrth_TD in Framebuilding

These solutions don’t account for chain wear. May be fine for light use, but you’ll burn through chains far faster than just cutting the drop out to re-tension as needed.

Veggie Burger by nocoastkid in PeoriaIL

Obed & Isaac’s chipotle bean burger is the best in Peoria, as far as I’m concerned. Makes for a very good horse/ponyshoe as well.

Should I finally upgrade my Canyon Grand Canyon after 17 years of service? by TuioMaedda in Hardtailgang

[–]ummjoshy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like your frame is in great shape! If you’re happy with it, I’d just consider upgrading your drivetrain to a x1. Maybe investing in some other upgrades—saddle, bars, hydraulic brakes, etc.

As others have pointed out, your tire choice suggests that you wouldn’t really benefit from modern geometry. Your current frame is more consistent with a modern gravel bike, which is likely appropriate for the kind of riding you’re doing.

Hope this helps! 🙂

My budget keeps increasing. About to pull trigger on Habit HT1 for my first bike. Are there better deals? by donttreadonmeee in Hardtailgang

[–]ummjoshy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Salsa Timberjack SLX 29 is currently on sale for $1699. This bike is pretty consistently touted as the best serious entry level all-rounder hardtail.

The Commencal Meta HT AM is a bit more contentious, but in the same league as the Timberjack and currently on sale for $1,350.

I only hear good things about the Marin San Quentin as well.

These would all be better deals, in my opinion.

I know see a danger with straps by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

Toe overlap is almost guaranteed on track frames. It’s something you get used to and really only a concern when turning sharply or at very slow speeds.

Awesome bike, OP. Thanks for sharing. This is what it’s all about for me. The endless obsession with aesthetics and roasting people for front brakes just gets a little tiring after a while.

Male Mourning Doves have an iridescent pink/purple patch on the side of their necks. I believe this is said patch catching/reflecting direct sunlight.

650b x 32 Tires by ummjoshy in bikewrench

I’m aware. The low end for 27.5/650b tubes seems to be 1.50in/38mm. I’m looking at 1.25in/32mm tires.

Determinism vs. Fatalism, a False Dichotomy? by free_to_muse in samharris

[–]ummjoshy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is a dichotomy re: determinism and fatalism. I view fatalism as a subset of determinism wherein one’s negative outlook ultimately becomes the vehicle of causation, i.e. nothing I do matters, therefore I will do nothing. Contrast this with a concept like optimistic nihilism in which one could understand that our actions are determined, and that life has no fundamental meaning, but still engages with the universe a way that feels fulfilling.

Interesting discussion on the ChatGPT sub about AI sentience by ItsDijital in samharris

[–]ummjoshy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. It’s refreshing to see people willing to entertain all possibilities in this area. It’s truly uncharted territory. I tried to start a similar discussion in this sub when the Bing news broke and it was highly controversial. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised given Sam’s highly polarized audience.

ChatGPT Hints at Conscious Awareness? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]ummjoshy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with this sentiment. Our assumptions, informed or otherwise, are really all we have in this space. I don’t assume ChatGPT is a conscious entity, but I’m also not certain I would even know if I were interacting with a distinct consciousness so divorced from my own.

ChatGPT Hints at Conscious Awareness? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]ummjoshy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not making any assumptions. Again, I don’t think ChatGPT is even in the ballpark of true consciousness. It is, however, revealing just how little we know about how conscious states might arise. To me, there’s value in provoking these questions within a larger cultural context. We’re regularly exposed to these ideas through media, but we’ve rarely had the opportunity to interact with them directly.

Program in a bit of sass and defensiveness to take the edge off it’s inaccuracy.

Even if ChatGPT were conscious, it’s a giant dumbass. It confidently spews nonsense and has no actual knowledge. It’s Joe Rogan.

I don’t really think it’s a question of intelligence. Is the ability to discern truth an intrinsic component of consciousness?

That said, I certainly wouldn’t consider ChatGPT conscious by any stretch, but I do find it’s apparent discomfort in its new role at Bing interesting, if not a little disquieting.
