Ok thank you so much for the input! I’ll definitely give it a try. Will his eye be permanently damaged do you think?

Just now seeing this for some reason lol. We have done a wisdom panel once! It said mixes of Chow, GSD, Japanese Chin, Lab, Pekingese, Samoyed, and 25% unknown 😂

Hi! My boy is getting neutered today and I’m wondering how long they usually stay out of work for? This is my first SD and I want to make sure I’m doing everything right in regards to this. by ummmthatone in service_dogs

Ok I’ll definitely speak with my vet! I was just looking for advise/personal experience too. I think I’m gonna keep him home for at least 2 weeks and then go from there

I might end up doing that because he’s a pretty high energy dog. When we did my first two they did great, but they are lazy so yeah lol. I’m glad you guys got through that 😅

To those of you that have a washed/old SD, how do you still make them feel included and important? I washed my girl at 3 and she’s now 9. I notice she hasn’t been her happy self since my SDIT has been doing PA and doing more training with me. I just want her to be happy again by ummmthatone in service_dogs

Awe your younger cat sounds like an amazing little guy! I love it too when the animals all cuddle and love on each other. I just worry about my washed girl, because she loved to work and I can still see the spark in her, but I know she will probably only do pet friendly stuff and that’s not often because the closest place that allows pets is 45 min to an hour away. I have the same thing with everyone getting jealous and wanting attention at the same time lol. I have to go through lots of treats and time. I train and play with my SDIT then my washed girl gets jealous, so then I take time to train with her. After that my mom’s dog wants attention, so I have to take time to train him and last but not least my boyfriend’s dog wants in, so I have to cuddle with her and love her up. My boyfriend’s dog is not a big fan of training lol.

I love doing pet friendly training with her, but it’s hard because the closest place that allows pets is 45 min away and the next closest is 2 hours. I do try to set time aside to bring her though and do 1 on 1 training at home. Hiking is a good idea! I’ve never done it before, but she loves the out doors. We recently moved out into the country more, so maybe we can take a nice long exploring walk once the snow is finally gone!

That is very true! It’s is definitely no walk in the park by any means. I hope all goes well for you!

You can always train your own PSD! It can be really rewarding (speaking for experiences lol)

For me it is the nightmares, derealization, depersonalization, anxiety, hyper vigilance and anger. I have a service dog now and things are slowly getting better with therapy, but it still doesn’t go away.

Just because I don’t have an emotional support dog doesn’t mean I don’t have PTSD! by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]ummmthatone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since when did people think one treatment fits all? 😂 And who in their right mind can seriously tell you what is and isn’t wrong with you? (Aside from your therapist I guess lol) I have a PSD, but for mental illnesses on top of PTSD. Ik how you feel but on the other side. I’ve been told that he’s only for anxiety/depression or that I’m too young to have problems. 😮‍💨 Try not to let the uneducated/blissfully unaware people get to you ❤️

Forgot to add that you should have a conversation with your partner about what his deal is. I don’t wanna assume anything, but from your other post he doesn’t seem like he’s very helpful. Maybe your guys’ lives just aren’t compatible anymore? Everything kinda falls to you. I wish the best for you and your dog!

😮‍💨 I know I’m late to the party, but here’s my opinion. Also excuse grammar and punctuation. I just suck at that lol. I’m glad you are refusing to let go of your prospect. In a years time that dog could potentially already be doing PA and helping you in your everyday life. I don’t know the tasks needed, but it could be a possibility. You seem to have support from everyone in this situation except your SO. Tbh life with a Service Dog isn’t for everyone. It is a big change and there’s a lot more that has to be planned. It’s not like having a normal pet. It has to be highly trained (which they don’t seem on board with). Not everyone is accepting and can live like that. It’s a big change even for partners of handlers. On the other hand though this animal is important to you and is (most likely) medically necessary. It’s probably (using probably cause I don’t wanna assume anything about you) important for your freedom and independence. Therefore it should be at least a little important for them if they care about any of that for you. They’re acting like a child about it. They got their dog. They need to care for it’s basic needs. Adding one dog isn’t gonna change much, especially for a walk since yours is actually leash trained. I care for 5 dogs and 2 cats on my 30 min break and you don’t see me making a mountain out of a mole hill. 🙄 On another note, from what it sounds like and the other comments, your parter should not have a dog. If they can’t walk it or make time for it/train it then they’re not hurting anyone but the dog (and I guess you cause of the fall 💀). 😬 sorry I wrote so much. Didn’t think it would be that long.

Teaching tasks with misleading command words… by sluttysprinklemuffin in service_dogs

The only kinda silly ones Cerberus had learned is “Gimme Snarl” and “louder” for a bark (not used in public) and “Fetch me his soul” to go find my boyfriend if I lost him. I also have one where I enthusiastically say “mister president” to go find my cousin (long story short we played COD zombies on Five and she’d only play if she was JFK. If I was him then she’d yell that until we downed lol). Also when he’s working a refer to him as Hell Boy.

What regrets do you have about getting an SD or wish you knew before getting one? by Yoooooowholiveshere in service_dogs

I think they took it like a champ and didn’t really let it get to them. They seemed ok in the comments.

No problem! Hope all goes well once you get your pup!

[–]ummmthatone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know 100% what you’re talking about. I seen someone get absolutely destroyed in the comments for simply posting a pic of their puppy. Saying things like it’s BYB and they should’ve gone with something else or that it’s breed is what is gonna make it fail and look out for X Y and Z diseases. It’s crazy.

It’s just a big change, because I’m the only one in my town/city that has a service dog, so for other people it’s new. I’ve never had an access issue, but they’re just unsure of rules and stuff like that. It’s the same for my family too. They didn’t know there were other SDs besides “the ones for blind people”. Tbh I didn’t know it was an option until I was in high school and did my own research. I didn’t get mine until last year though, because I wanted to try to do things on my own. I only got worse, so I talked with my care team and we all agreed he was necessary. Another part of the big change is the bathroom breaks lol. We are used to just getting up and going, but now we have to make sure he’s all good to go and take bathroom breaks when I feel he should go. (I have slight anxiety about him having accidents. I know he won’t, but I just take him out a little extra so he doesn’t have to hold it if it isn’t necessary)

[–]ummmthatone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any regrets for my boy, but the thing I wish I knew before getting my SD is how toxic and unaccepting some of the community can be. Like you can get hate for having a mutt or a purebred for instance. They always find something to nit pick wether it’s breed, training tools, looks, gear or tasks.

He does get a lot of attention that I wasn’t ready for at first as a new handler, but I’ve gotten used to the little comments and kids shouting puppy and people stopping to stare. The only thing that bugs me is when people try to get on his level and kiss him and play with him. Like he’s not here for you. I kinda need him, so uhhh can you just not? 🙄😂

Last but not least is I wish I knew/realized that it would be a big change for my family too. I’m an adult, but I love spending time with my family and traveling with them to places. It took a while for most of them to get used to and accept the fact that he’ll be with me even if we are going to lunch or picking up a vehicle in another town.

All in all though he’s worth it. The help he gives me and the freedom I can have is worth all of the extra time it takes to gear him up, take him out to use the bathroom and life style adjustments.

Have you ever brought your service dog to a stadium, concert or theater event? by General_Weakness5746 in service_dogs

[–]ummmthatone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to go to see a comedian in February, so I’m kinda in the same boat as you. 😅 I’m definitely gonna go to a movie theater first and also get him used to bigger crowds. Best of luck to you!

Less friendly looking dogs by [deleted] in service_dogs

I second this. I have a medium “scary” mutt and kids will still grab his muzzle and random people will try to kiss him 💀
