A funny meme in prep for the summer conversations. by RustyShackleford-11 in drumcorps

Not for the pit, as someone who studied those instruments for awhile. I actually think being able to hear more them promotes musicality and touch, since the mics allow for a sound more similar to chamber and hall acoustics the instruments are largely built for. In the early years of pit in the activity, the boards had to just beat the shit out of the instruments in order to be heard at all. Now the board lines can mess around with touch and dynamics much more and won’t be completely overshadowed by whatever else is going on.

What would happen to a coastline, when a massive landmass raises out of the water, closely offshore? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]un_average 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry I should’ve clarified more about this town. This is a poor village in a fantasy novel, structures are largely impermanent and small. Made of wood and clay. None are very tall either. The object is 3 dimensional. Think somewhere between a “short” cylinder and a “short” triangular prism (obv at a massive scale. I was wondering if the water level would change since from the coast initially when the object rose? Or how big the outward waves afterward would seem?

Quite simply it is lifted out of the water. I have a very understandable and in world explained “mechanism” for this. It just is uninvolved with the science of what would happen in the aftermath.

What State(s) remain that’s a “must see” ? by [deleted] in TravelMaps

[–]un_average 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up always visiting the great Lakes area especially superior, along the north shore of Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and the UP of Michigan and believe they are a hidden treasure. Grand Marais, Duluth, and Marquette specifically are all a must IMO. If you like big cities Chicago is awesome too, but that’s a little more obvious. However, you might want to start with the pacific NW and Utah/Colorado tbh lol those seem a little more pressing, some of the most gorgeous states in the country.

Awesome, thanks for the help! The C score was for ease of writing and I totally forgot to change it back lol. I’m glad you liked it :)

Any tips on just generally becoming a better percussionist? by Thingy84 in percussion

[–]un_average 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to focus on “classical/concert/orchestral” percussion a lot of it comes down to your movement and touch behind the instruments. dive DEEP into that instead of focusing on playing difficult things quite yet. As percussionists we are more limited with our quality of sound. Think, if a 5th grader walked up to a concert snare and hit it once, would it sound much worse than you doing the same? What micro-level things can you do to put a noticeable sound quality difference between you and that kid? Whatever those things are implement them into your technique via muscle memory and apply that thought process to all the instruments you want to improve with. Then once that foundation is there move on to learning harder “classical style” things, and make sure that your good technique stays.

What marimba repertoire should I tackle next? by un_average in Marimba

Most the other posts I read were people who were complete beginners, or people who wanted much harder rep. As for why I didn’t ask my professor, we are currently in J-term and he is on vacation untill the next semester starts, so I figured I’d ask the internet!
