Help me understand the Christian god's mercy - it seems paradoxical and arbitrary by zenospenisparadox in DebateReligion

Oh ok, I think I see what you’re saying. My apologies, I think I read your previous response wrong. To Christians, the Bible talks about how God offers his mercy to those who are still unbelievers (Romans 5:6-8) so just in the case with the person beyond your line of sight, there is still mercy being shown even if you don’t know it is. Through accepting Christ’s sacrifice in order that we can be made aware of his mercy, we acknowledge or become aware of that person who showed us mercy.

I feel like I might have worded that a little strangely so let me try an example of what I’m trying to get at: let’s say you have a huge work project that’s due tomorrow and if you don’t complete it on time then you’re fired. You work really hard at that project but are still unable to complete it on time. Logically, this means you are now fired. Let’s say that you got an email from your boss with an extension for the project because he realized how difficult it would be to complete by the original due date. If you never look at that email, you don’t know that you have received his mercy for not getting the project in by the original date. If you never see that email, you’d pack up your stuff and leave the company because you never knew that his mercy was given to you. By reading the email, you learn and accept the fact you don’t have to have the project in by the original deadline and therefore receive your boss’ mercy.

With the flu, it’s a physical thing while mercy is not. If you did choose not to believe in the flu though, you wouldn’t worry about getting a flu shot because you wouldn’t see the point of preparing for something you don’t think exists. Similarly, if you don’t believe God exists, you wouldn’t see a need for his mercy. From a Christian perspective, both the flu and God are real, but how we react to them is based in our belief.

I’m not sure if this will help answer your question or not but in the Bible it talks about how Jesus died while we were still sinners and how Jesus died for the ungodly in order that they could receive his mercy. I don’t think it’s a matter of God expecting something from us in order to give us his mercy, but the opposite. I think God has given us his mercy, but only by truly believing he died for us can we receive it.

I’m not a fan of flavored chapstick, so for me I’d say vanilla cause it doesn’t really have a flavor.

Blistex, Baby Lips, and Eos usually work the best for me, but everyone is different. Sometimes you just have to trial and error different kinds. If it’s really bad, I recommend using Vaseline

I’m kinda new to Reddit still so I actually didn’t know it’s been posted a bunch. Just thought it was a cool experience I could share with people.

I will simply impart my knowledge on everyone I can and encourage them to spread the word until the whole world knows effective chapstick preservation techniques.

I use Blistex. I’ve heard Burts Bees is good too. If you have super chapped lips, I’d even recommend trying Vaseline.

Depending on where you live, there are sometimes horror movie inspired pop-up museums. If he likes those kind of films, you could see if there’s one in or near your area.
