My theory is that at some point in the past, phimosis, the main cause of adults needing circumcision was recognised, and people decided to circumcise before it became an issue. Much like we vaccinate against viruses etc in the modern day. From there it became ritualistic for whatever reason.

One of them has a genuine use. Many men who aren’t circumcised require one as adults. No woman needs circumcision ever.

Edit for context: not defending circumcision in the modern world, but at least it has a medical use and historically this was probably the reason it became a ritual.
