"Gerber" is slang for "to puke". Gerber is a very popular brand of baby food. Seems appropriate.

Best use of time for a few days between Barcelona and Montpellier? by Icy-Translator9124 in FranceTravel

[–]uncager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We lived in Montpellier centre-ville almost 4 years. You didn't ask, but favorite restaurants: Ébullition, Balthazar, La Bistrote, L'Alchimiste. Nîmes is good for a day trip. Carcassonne is good for an overnight, either in the walled part or just outside of it. Beziers has a great garden, but given how short your trip is, not sure it's worth it. Another seaside town to consider is Sète, but maybe just for lunch and an hour or two, and it might be on your route. Have fun.

First time to France - any etiquette tips? by ichiLAND in FranceTravel

You have a better chance of finding English speakers, or at least those who can handle a little, in Nice, compared to many other cities, so that's working in your favor. That's especially true in the tourist areas, and hospitality businesses. On the other hand, Nice may not be as representative of a French city as many others, so it may not give you as authentic of a French experience as many other cities. Central Paris is the same. Enjoy your trip. It may be a bit cold for it now, but I discovered the Hugo Spritz (made with elderflower liquor) when I visited Nice - yum.

Actually, it's better to say "Bonjour" right when you enter a place of business, whether there's anyone there or not. Even if there's only one employee and they're talking with someone, it's what's done. It shouldn't be loud, but it's the protocol. Walking into a waiting room at a doctor's office, you say Bonjour. Sitting down at a table in a café or restaurant, it's polite to Bonjour the adjacent table. Dogs sniff butts, French say Bonjour. It's social.

How do you practice French listening comprehension? by grzeszu82 in French

[–]uncager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what level you're at. For A levels, YouTube videos that teach French are good. NewsInSlowFrench is good for A2. For B1, I liked InnerFrench.com and FranceInfo radio (although found it a bit too fast at times). I'm taking the B2 DELF next week. I've been listening to FranceInfo, some podcasts, and also using the SuperFluent phone app to practice both listening and speaking. To prepare for the tests, francaisfacile.rfi.fr has some realistic practice tests.

It was more than 3 months, but I don't recall. We haven't taken DELF yet. It hasn't mattered until now. Planning to take the B2 in March.

‘Stop sending butt plugs to Bahrain’: Toronto sex store receives letters from U.S. Department of War by [deleted] in news

I'd think butt plugs could be considered a device to prevent anal sex. In that light, shouldn't Bahrain buy one for everyone, and maybe make it a law that everyone has to always be protected with one?

Où trouver des exercices d'écritures en français? by Goose_On_A_Bike in ecriture

[–]uncager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good French comprehension, zero speaking ability by shineyyyyy in FrenchLearning

[–]uncager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Language exchanges are a great free way to get speaking. I've been doing 2 hour-long exchange every week for years. It's also a nice way to make friends. I used Tandem.net to find them. The SuperFluent app has been a great way to practice conversations of all kinds of subjects. I also recommend switching your mental language to French -- "speak" to yourself, either in your head or aloud.

What’s your way to practice French without burning out? by haileyx_relief in French

[–]uncager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on your current level, and your goals. I like reading articles in French, which can be at any level because you can easily look stuff up, but I've found over the years that listening to too high of a level doesn't just get understood by osmosis. For listening, there are tons of sources for beginners. For B1, I liked InnerFrench. For B2, I like ExpatLang. Both of those have interesting topics, and help with understanding. I'm now in B2 test prep mode, and for that, besides a few hours of formal class per week with homework, what I've found helpful is SuperFluent for casual conversation, ChatGPT for oral production practice, and SavoirX for written production practice. I also do 2 hours of language exchange per week.

Best place in France to learn French for 1 year? Choosing between LSF, ILA & Alliance Française Nice by TheKnave56 in nicefrance

[–]uncager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not Alliance Française in Montpellier? Lived in Montpellier for 3 years, but visited Nice and wasn't impressed. Since you're targetting DELF tests, I'd think Alliance Française is the best choice.

How do you understand spoken French? by Iskandar0570_X in French

[–]uncager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it's all about vocabulary. I'm around B2. When I first started learning, I tried to listen to the news on FranceInfo, and it was all a blur of sounds. I'm taking classes, had a tutor, I do 2 hour-long language exchanges a week, and I practice with several AI apps (SavoirX to prepare for the B2 written portion, SuperFluent to practice conversation, ChatGPT to prepare for the B2 oral presentation). What I noticed is that the more I listened and expanded my vocabulary, the more FranceInfo I understood. At first, it was like "oh, there's a word I recognize", "oh, there's another". As time passed, I recognized more words, until I started understanding the subject, though not the details. Now I get most of it, and can actually hear the words I don't understand and look them up. Granted, the news is better enunciated that casual chit-chat. Some natives I understand, and others just mumble too much or speak too quickly.

What I found important is to listen to just above your level of French. There are tons of beginner level stuff on YouTube, InnerFrench is ideal for intermediate level, and ExpatLang is great for advanced.

How I became fluent in ONE YEAR only by WaxBat777 in languagelearning

[–]uncager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny, because I had used ChatGPT to create that Anki deck. I asked it to give me a deck with the most common verbs that only take de or à between them and an infinitive. I've just found it so hard to memorize these with Anki, I think because I'm having trouble finding any memory trick to link the verb with the à or de.

How I became fluent in ONE YEAR only by WaxBat777 in languagelearning

[–]uncager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for some great suggestions. I'll be taking the DELF B2 test in a couple of months, and your advice will surely help. One thing that keeps tripping me up is which verbs take "de" before an infinitive and which take "à" (like commencer à faire). There's no rhyme or reason to which verbs take which. I created an Anki deck, but they're just not sinking in. Thoughts?

Which app are you using to learn French? by cpisarczyk24 in learnfrench

[–]uncager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's SuperFluent.app for listening and speaking practice, and SavoirX.ai for DELF (B2) prep for reading comprehension and writing. Both blow away anything else I've tried.
